Any of these westerners worth watching

Pick 2

Once upon time in west
Outlaw Josey W
Searches
Butch Cassidy
Pale rider
Rio bravo

Thx
All considered classics except Once upon a time I. West. Not familiar with that one. The rest I have watched multiple times. Tough to only pick two but Outlaw Josey Whales and The Searchers if I had to.

The Jack Bull

I own that one...

Another good one, though it could be argued that it is not a western, is In Pursuit of Honor.

I'd add "The Searchers" and "Hondo" to the mix and the Duke's last movie "The Shootist" ain't bad. Just for fun you could watch "El Dorado" and Rio Bravo". They are essentially the same movie.

Hondo is very good, but a little slow. You are correct about Rio Bravo and El Dorado though. I still prefer El Dorado because of the Mississippi character, but a young Angie Dickinson is quite pleasing to the eye!

The Shootist is a fantastic recommendation. The parallels between the character dying of cancer and Wayne's own struggle with the disease at the same time make it especially poignant.

You can just say “western”.

The HBO series Deadwood is the best Western ever.
Absolutely brilliant. I've watched it twice and just recently saw the movie, that concluded the 3 season series. I guess it got too expensive to keep filming it, but besides the great acting, it was the writing that was the star there. Some say that the script and writing by David Milch ranks among the best ever.

A little surprised no one has mentioned one of my favorite Westerns.

If you mean “The Searchers” made by John Ford and with John Wayne its a great film.

It's one of the better remakes ever.

Keep your seat trash ;)

I'll gladly second, or third, or fourth that take, the True Grit remake is a work of art. I would also throw my hat in the ring for Open Range, so simple a story yet such a joy to watch. The gun fight alone is worth the price of admission and seeing Michael Jeter one last time is always a pleasure. Love Unforgiven as well.

Once upon time in west....Meh
Outlaw Josey W....Must watch
Searchers....Classic, considered by many to be John Wayne's best performance
Butch Cassidy.....OK
Pale rider.....Must watch
Rio bravo.....Must watch

I'll add these must watch westerns:

Red River

She wore a yellow ribbon

Open range

Unforgiven

Silverado

Fort Apache

True grit (the second one is the better of the two IMHO)

The man who shot liberty valance.....less of a true western than a moral story

Little Big Man

Ballad of Buster Scruggs.....Just for shits and giggles. ;)

Tombstone

Wyatt Earp

A lot of folks would include Lonesome Dove but I'm one of the few that found it Meh.
What about
Wild bunch and high noon

I never really considered the wild bunch a western but it's very good in it's own right.

High Noon is more of a moral story, again, good in it's own right.
Are both action movies

Top Bottom
