What other possible reason would a crude vessel such as this have the need for vastly overpowered engines and be running with multiple bundles of waterproofed cargo in the dead of night with no lights and no itinerary?

If this is a military operation I would bet they have snoopers watching them load the things in certain countries where law enforcement looks the other way.
