Eliminating the DOE would probably result in kids being too smart to vote for Democrats.

Sounds like win to me.

GOP senator introduces bill to eliminate DOE

"Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Republican Sen. Mike Rounds has introduced legislation to eliminate the Department of Education, a policy that President-elect Donald Trump campaigned on ahead of the general election.

Rounds, of South Dakota, announced the so-called Returning Education to Our States Act on Thursday, describing the department -- founded nearly 45 years ago -- as having grown bloated and ineffective.

"The federal Department of Education has never educated a single student, and it's long past time to end this bureaucratic Department that causes more harm than good," he said in a statement.

If passed by both chambers of Congress and signed into law by the president, the bill would abolish the Department of Education 180 days after becoming law."

I'm fine with ending it but it's not going to happen.

It will be like ending Obamacare. In the end nothing happens and it's all forgot.

I hope Jimmy Carter lives long enough to see the DOE eliminated. :laughing0301:
My guess is that the Grim Reaper will refuse to take Jimmy as he props his eye lids open with tooth picks and forces him to watch Fox News to see it come to fruition.

It does seem silly to me to think that the GOP, that could not even build a wall with Trump, could do anything to reduce the size and scope of the bureaucratic state.

Governments are like stars. They just keep getting bigger, and bigger and bigger and bigger, until the entire weight of the star collapses on itself and forms a massive black hole that sucks everything in to destroy it if it is even remotely nearby.

Obamacare wasn't ended, but it sure as hell was neutered. Remember the "Shared Responsibility" individual mandate fee for not having health insurance? It went away 2018.

Yeah, I'd like Democrats to list what the department has actually done for the good. Our kids are getting dumber and dumber, learning about DEI and critical race theory and that parents are terrorists and learning nothing about the three "R's".

You can end it, but you still need an entity to handle monies going to the states and student aid, unless you want to get rid of monies going to the states and student aid.

Just because you close the Department of Education doesn't mean the money they normally would grant to schools ends and disappears, the grants can be issued from other agencies. Federal school funding is about $119 billion a year, while the Department of Education's budget is over $200 billion. So theoretically, the Feds could easily double the entirely of the money they give schools just in the savings from closing the DOE.

School districts are also funded by your property taxes. Very little federal DOE money is part of the ordinary school district budget, except for a few one-time grants. And the thing about those grants and funding is that if they don't spend it, they get less. So they literally throw money away so they don't get a cut in funding.

I see no need to send it to D.C. to then send it back to the states.

It doesn't have a prayer to make it through the current Senate. But it might pass after January 1. I think it too quick and they need to get the information out to the public as to WHY the Department is just wasting the taxpayer's money as it does nothing to improve Education. The very few useful functions could easily be handled by HHS and we don't need an infrastructure and 4,400 employees to do them.

I've talked to several public high school teachers here in Virginia and what they tell me is that the DoE is critical in getting resources to schools in poor areas. Without the DoE they say, the disparity between rich and poor school districts will only increase.

I personally don't think it will be 100% gotten rid of, or what's left of it might be put in with something else. Just take the machete to about 90% of it.

I think what people forget, is why these programs got started in the first place. No one said, let's create the DoE and see what it can do. No, there were problems that needed to be solved and DoE was established to solve them. You can debate how successful it was but, once it is gone, the problems will still need solving.

I think all of these started out with good intentions. But, when it comes to government, we are dealing with fission. One thing splits into two, two into four, four into eight, well, you get the picture. Before long you have created a behemoth and an out of control chain reaction which cannot be stopped. Trump is trying to stop the chain reaction and stop the fission reactions.

When you consider the lack of success of DOE, it is a blessing. All it does is perpetuate ignorance and poverty.
