PARIS – French President Nicolas Sarkozy has ordered legislation that would ban women from wearing Islamic veils that fully cover the face and body in public places, the government said Wednesday.

It is Sarkozy's first political action toward an outright ban, though he has repeatedly said such outfits oppress women and are not welcome in France, home to a firmly secular government.

Sarko is not all that popular in France. I don't know why you would think he represents France in the minds of leftists.

More likely they'd recognize that the lesson to be found in Reagan's compromise with the Left on illegal aliens, is that the only result that one can expect from compromising with the Left is that whatever the policy seeks to resolve will only get worse; requiring further compromise with the Left, which will only makes things worse, requiring greater compromise... making matters even WORSE!

Meaning that it's pretty unlikely that Reagan would be advocating for Amnesty of Illegals, today; given the failure that such a policy has already demonstrated.

They'd be justifying it by saying that illegals in the 80's were nicer, more attractive, cleaner, worked harder and became patriotic members of American society, and just because they couldn't afford all those damned fees to apply for citizenship shouldn't be blamed on them.
