Matt Pike (from High On Fire, which I just posted) had a previous band called SLEEP that had a more 60s/70s sound to it:

Or if you prefer a more 80s-sound, Sabbath style: CANDLEMASS

Heh...yeah, no doubt.

There are a lot of cool bands in the doom and death/doom subgenre. A Christian band (surprisingly) called Paramaecium put out one of the coolest death-doom CDs of the 1990s called Exhumed of the Earth. I'll let you check it out some time if you want.

illl have to check that out. I had a christian death metal cassette from a band called Mortification back in the day. Musically, I can't say that I was impressed, and the concept of a "christian" death metal band still boggles the mind, but it was an interesting take on the whole genre.

I'd say it goes a little beyond sounding like Sabbath and say it's a shameless ripoff of "Lord of this World." But I still like it. :D

Both of them Rock. Their 60-minute super epic is probably the best stoner/doom metal ever when you're 'in the mood'. And the story behind is hilarious. Candlemass is also real good.
