Having been involved at grass roots level in the local Republican party for some years now, the GOP is often also a case of "herding cats". Actually, often a case of "herding herds of cats".I see the Democrats' problem as the concentration of power within the DNC. Leadership in its quest to eliminate dissension within the party and present a united front has pushed the rank-and-file party members aside. This tight-knit inner circle of elite members deciding what's best for all isn't at all democratic.
So, I don't see the Republicans as more disciplined. Seems to me that Republicans' way of handling election nominations is a more democratic process of empowering their members. This leads to their candidates having widespread support within the party and their rank-and-file feeling they're more part of the process.
I wouldn't put it down to "more disciplined" either, so much as more reasonable, rational, logical, and willing to compromise for the better good, common goal. Which might appear more democratic, however at State to National levels the GOP has it's own concentrations of power, elitism, and entitlements of the membership, especially leadership.
BTW, this reply applies more to the OP now that I reflect upon it.
