As for your prediction about totalitarian government, I kind of agree. That is a likely outcome, although at this point, it appears to be a situation where it's better to push for control of said government rather than to avoid the totalitarianism itself.

The majority of history shows us that libertarianism is the exception rather than the norm when it comes to society. This is part of why what's happening in Argentina right now is so interesting and enticing. Unfortunately, that's not really possible for this society.

So, in the absence of that possibility, it becomes a game of trying to maintain control of an increasingly burdensome state.

I would argue we became a fascist country under FDR. After that, it's just been different variations of collusion between government and industry.

Also, most modern countries fit the economic components of fascism, if not the social ones.

People often conflate fascism with Hitler, but he was National Socialist rather than fascist. He did ally with fascists, however.

All this aside, I don't view all forms of fascism as undesirable. Franco certainly ran Spain better than his opposition would have, for example.

The general victim narrative that he sells, and MAGA laps up.
Rule by executive order, rather than the legislative process.
The obsession with loyalty and punishing anyone who doesn't placate it.
Scapegoating foreigners and other minorities.
Glorification of violence and militant imagery (Dept of War?)
Efforts to control the media and punish dissent there (Ministry of Truth)
Over the top fear mongering and conspiracy spinning.

Now, before you go into your denial dance and start serving up excuses, and all the reasons why its different when "your side" does it, you might not want to bother. I can't stop you of course, but I've heard most of the limp excuses already. If you're just listing those I won't respond. If you stumble on something new though, we might have something to talk about.
