Amsterdam Suggestions?

My wife and I are going on a "Viking" river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel in August. We have arranged to get to Amsterdam a few days early so we can spend time there.

Without specific suggestions, we will probably just get on a Hop-on-Hop-off bus and spend time at the places that look most interesting.

Any specific suggestions from people who have been there?

Thinks Poland and Denmark are two better place than Holland.
Ferry and drink some beer will not hurt anyone.
