The main tool in the US economic arsenal seems to be sanctions against countries that do not do what we tell them to do.

These often back fire and never end up hurting those we are trying to control.

This OpEd is a good example of this. We are pushing what could be a vital ally into the arms of China.

I have stated my disapproval of our sanctions where a country won't bend to our every will and it's been noted many times how China will rise to power by working with countries as opposed to against them, but why do we need Pakistan?

We don't. They harbor Terrorist. They are with us only because they want to get paid. Furthermore, they are not really with us.

sanctions are more of a diplomatic signal than anything else.

most of the nations with sanctions are places ruled by guys who just don't care if their people suffer.

Not sure need is the right word, but we have few allies in that region and the one we did have we have driven into the arms of China.

Nor do we as we place the sanctions.
It is not our place to care about the people of other countries. That is why they have governments of their own.

It's not our place to screw with them in the first place.

Corporate interests. We sacrifice and make millions suffer over the greed of corporate interests.
American interersts. Economic interests. Why are you trying to downplay the fact that we have a right to protect our interests?

Vague mumbo jumbo. Tell me about how we protected our interests and benefitted being in Afghanistan for 20 years?

Explain why it's any of our business who Venezuela does business with to the point we must harm it's people?

Is Bin Laden dead or not?

Until Biden came along, we had no attacks out of that area.

Funny how you focus laser like on JUST the areas you think will make the other side look bad but never on those success, like Iran being quieted for almost a decade until Obama and Biden decided to relax the sanctions and low n behold, we have nothing but war in that region. All due to lifting sanctions.

Or the fact that the Norks were quiet until the Democrats managed to get into office or that the sanctions against China were actually making things better for the American worker, etc., etc..

Bin Laden was in Pakistan. We didn't invade and stay in Pakistan 20 years. OBL was killed in 2011. We stayed for over a decade more. What did we gain?

Of course we did.
