Although I enjoyed my trip to Canada, I got scammed. I was more guarded on my trip to Mexico and didn't get scammed there, but in Canada knowing the country was much safer I let my guard down and let myself get scammed at a restaurant.

So I walk into a restaurant in Canada and ask do they take American dollars and the waiter says of course. At the end of the meal I ask him how much in US dollars is this...the guy overcharges me, since the price he said was in Canadian and not US dollars. Not knowing I am being scammed at the time I decide to be a nice guy and give him a good tip, I tell him give me back $20 and he can keep the change. He hands me a $20 Canadian. I tell him this is not a $20 US dollar. The guy starts laughing at me and says I only give back Canadian.

So from them on my trip I got my money exchanged to Canadian. I told this story to several Canadians I met and they told me this is all too common, these restaurants and shops will take advantage of you as an American tourists here. They said it sadly unfortunately happens to many American tourists.

When we would go to Canada on Walleye fishing trips I would just get me some Canadian money at the bank.

If they didn't have that much on hand (I'd usually get $500 worth at the time) they would get it for me within a couple of days.

It made things run a lot smoother.

We always only use local currency when traveling out of the US. Even then with the exchange rates or foreign transaction fees on swipes, there is always going to be someone other than you making out on it. I think it was close to $100 in fees for my wife to get $500 in Belize dollars when she ordered them to make sure we had some walking around cash.

Yeah when I traveled to Canada before and saw Niagra falls we just used American cash and so did many tourists by Niagra. The same when we went to Cancun, Mexico. Porta Vallarta and other all inclusive hotels in Mexico.

I enjoyed my trip to Canada, but from now on I am only going use Canadian money on any future trips

NO LINK + NO PROOF = LIES

My trips to Canada (early 70s) were what would be termed now as "all inclusive" now. All i had to do was get there.

Three very substantial meals a day, a "water lunch" for out on the lake. I spent very little cash there except at the bar at the lodge.

Other than gassing up and buying things at the village general store (lures and such) I needed very little Hoser cash.

You should see what they do to fellow Canadians who live here. They steal alot more than a few bucks at a restaurant...
