I thought I'd posted this before but the maps appear to be different. [Similar to one already in this thread] Kinda interesting @ Ya'll, you all, or you guys? Dialect maps showcase America's many linguistic divides | Mail Online another Daily Mail report of an American event!

How come I say may=uh-naze when I grew up in the blue zone?

That's pretty cool. I would have expected "may-uh-naze" to be the southeastern way. But I'm from VA and pretty much everyone around here says it the other way. I'll look up some other maps when I have more time. Cool stuff.

Ha!

I never realized not everyone knows pop=soda until the 1st time I went into a store here (texas) and asked the lady behind the counter where the pop was. Repeating my request did not help, I had to say "ya know, Pepsi?"

MAYO...

Custer said, "Man-aze a lotta engines out tear!"

What's interesting and perhaps troubling is how American regional dialects, which at one time were highly distinctive even within individual parts of cities and states, are gradually 'smoothing out' into a more homogeneous standard. This process has been aided by the unique mobility of Americans throughout our country historically, but has been greatly hastened since the advent of television. In some ways, it parallels the loss of languages globally that has greatly increased in recent centuries.
