I don't think this is a boast we can verify.

First, how do we define "Greatest"?

Second, How do we know we are the greatest when so many civilizations have been lost in the pages of history?

If anything has made us great, it's the fact that we've been blessed with the knowledge of wisdom of so many previous civilizations. We learned what worked and what didn't. Much of this knowledge was key in establishing our Republic.

But that's not all. If America is Great, it's because we are Good. Or we were.

When people cease to be good, they cease to be great.

Personally, I'd rather we were good and free than be "The Greatest" whatever that means.
