In this system, leading a national poll means nothing if the majority of that lead comes from only a few states, as Harris is doing. Winning California by 4 votes, or 4,000,000 votes gets you exactly the same number of electors.

That's really the salient point. The EC vote count trumps (see what I did there?) everything else, and you're correct, Harris winning 51% or 98% of California votes makes no difference in the EC vote count.

Yes there seems to be a massive shift.

It will shift and reshift toward the election. I don't think any early ballots have been sent yet. To be locked in for a win requires a national poll lead of around 53 % for the democrats or 55% for the GOP or thereabouts. Been a while since I have looked back at that mathematical analysis based on historic results. There is a polling tipping point, however at which it is almost statistically impossible to pull an upset.
