Technically, it's a religion, but the media and those who'll seek to harrass your employer into firing you don't usually differentiate between race and religion when it comes to a minority having their feelings 'hurt'. I don't really believe Islam should be classed as a religion. Technically, it is a totalitarian political theocratic movement with 'religion' as just one component part of the whole.

Can't blame them, because if anything happened and it was found out they received warning, the backlash would be much greater than it will be if not credible, yet closed.
