Taiwan, on the other hand, actually is recognized as a part of China. So legally, China could invade any time it wanted to. The main reason they don't is any such invasion would cost China far more than any benefit they would get when all that Taiwanese investment dries up on the mainland.

Uh, no, he stated we won't go to war over the Donbass. Russian domination of the Donbass and Crimea has been largely accepted. Putin went beyond that.

As far as Taiwan, they aren't their "own nation", they are STILL claiming they are the legitimate government of China. So any conflict between Taipei and Beijing is pretty much an internal matter as far as international law is concerned.
