Their financial motivation for pulling Kimmel's show are well understood. Especially for Nexstar cuz they need a FCC waiver to break the rules about the % of local TV markets one company can control.

Nexstar's deal with Tegna isn't straightforward. By buying Tegna, it would likely increase its local TV ownership to more than 39% of US households, which is prohibited by law.

Sinclair also has business before the FCC so cozying up to chairman Carr by appeasing his authoritarian impulses was viewed by Sinclair exec's as the wise thing to do.

But I'd rather talk about something else. Like the influence two companies run by conservatives can have on their viewer's politics.

AI Overview

As of 2024 and 2025, people continue to get their news from local news stations, especially local TV, but reliance on digital platforms is rapidly increasing, particularly among younger audiences.

AI Overview

Nexstar Media Group is generally described as having a conservative political orientation, although its programming is seen as less overtly conservative than competitors like Sinclair Broadcast Group. While the company maintains that its news is unbiased, its actions and history of political donations have drawn scrutiny.

AI Overview

Sinclair Broadcast Group operates or owns a large portion of local television, including 193 stations across the U.S. as of late September 2025, which allows them to reach over 40% of American households.

I don't know how many of you have seen the video linked to below, but it's a doozy.

So, we have two companies run by conservatives controlling a large portion of local TV markets with.......

Who is getting news from local stations
  • Persistent trust and reach: Local television continues to be a major source of news, with more than half of American adults watching local newscasts somewhat regularly, according to a 2025 report from Harvard's Shorenstein Center.
  • Highest trust rating: A 2025 Nieman Lab report notes that Americans place more trust in local news than national news, and a University of Delaware study found local TV to be the most trusted news source overall.
  • Older audience: A May 2024 Pew Research Center study showed that 35% of adults 65 and older follow local news very closely, a stark contrast to the 9% of adults ages 18 to 29 who do so.

Add local news broadcasts to the list of insidious ways conservatives misinform their audience leading to things like belief in the Big Lie.

Why do we want political propaganda on the public airwaves anyway? The reason Boomers are so twisted these days is because broadcast tv has been pushing a left leaning agenda for many years. Why not at least have one space where outright lies and purposeful political division are unacceptable?

Nexstar and Sinclair have standards, and the First Amendment protects their right from putting on programming that offends those standards.

Don't they have 1st Amendment rights on their own private TV stations to broadcast what they want?

Why do libs have a problem with the 1st Amendment? Do they think we need a Dr. Goebbels like censor making sure this crap is seen by the people?

Hopefully, the jury in the Tyler Robinson case doesn't here this leftist propaganda.

Jimmy Kimmel crying, "I have sinned" and invoking Jesus is something I never thought I would see.

Honestly, I think that hurt him more than being fired. :)

If you look at the map of Nexstar and Sinclair's coverage they are in Republican areas, so why would they carry democrat propaganda and lose viewers? Business is business.
I must say that's a curious defense of keeping the misinformed, misinformed. Kinda puts a different spin on the "liberal controlled media" does it not?

An assertion belied by the political bent of the folks controlling local news content.

There is no first amendment issue anywhere in this story.

ABC and The Affiliates have a business contact - local stations produce local programming and purchase national programming that they want from ABC.

Kimmel just lied about the shooter of Charlie Kirk, saying he was maga which was a lie.

Lies like this are unexcusable.

And the fact that Kimmel refused to attend the Kirk funeral in Arizona, refused to apologize to Mrs. Kirk, refused to buy time on the Hannity program and other highly rated programs to express his regrets, or to go on the Mark R. Levin program to face questions from the people, tell me he wasn't remoreseful or repentant in the least.

Their 1st A rights stop at the water's edge of violating the 1st A rights of others.

What was telling about ABC's reversal is their financial calculus in pulling Kimmel backfired. Hopefully, the same will happen to Sinclair and Nexstar but boycotting them is much more logistically problematic.

They have that right and we have the right to point out their bias
