Crashes involving large commercial trucks have been on the rise since 2016, when Barack Obama, the US president at the time, issued a memorandum removing the requirement to suspend drivers for violating English proficient standards.

Since 2016, when the Obama administration scrapped English literacy requirements for truck drivers, fatal crashes involving large trucks have risen year on year from around 4,500 to 8,837 in 2022 the last year for which data is available with some blaming non-English speaking drivers.
