In Canada the damage is self inflicted by media. They kept bellowing out that "you don't live in a police state, your healthcare is the best in to world. Canada is a vibrant, economic nation of civil liberties!".
The younger citizens in particular, are aware that this is all B.S. Unlike my docile generation who believed the police state was good and benevolent, we now have $160k a year covert cops and 20 hour waits AT THE EMERGENCY ROOM, just to get a bed. Only 37% of those under 35 believe the media "most of the time".
Perpetual mismanagement at our provincial and municipal level in particular.
When "news" doesn't match the experiences and reality of your readers, they will disappear accordingly.
Interest in the news, among young people in particular, has reached a new low, according to a global survey.
While engagement dipped for all age groups, the highly valued younger demographic was more prone to avoiding the news, most commonly due to fatigue and the negative effect on how they feel, the 2022 Reuters Institute Digital News Report found.
While a majority of people engaged with the news regularly, the annual survey, which gathered data from respondents in six continents and 46 markets, concluded that “the connection between journalism and much of the public may be fraying.”
Among the findings were that audiences under 35 years of age chose to avoid the news because it had “a negative effect on their mood (39 per cent)” and that they saw “too much news coverage of topics like politics or Coronavirus (39 per cent).” About four in ten people under 35 surveyed said they avoided the news often or sometimes, compared to 36 per cent of those 35 and older.

A third of youth avoid reading the news because they are worn out and don't trust it: poll
Respondents under 35 least trusting of news, with a third (37%) saying they trust news 'most of the time,' compared with nearly half (47%) of those 55 and older
