A 'Hard Left' view of the War in Ukraine

Although people on the Right tend to lump the whole Left together, they are wrong to do so.
While I agree with most of your post, I have to take issue with this line.
The entire democrat party has been co-opted by this hard left. Though some may speak as though they’re moderate, the reality is they’re bound to these Marxist tendencies by party affiliation and political survival.

Just like the 'Right', what we generally call the 'Left' consists of many currents of thought.

Holding our attention right now is the 'woke' component of the Left, who by traditional definitions, are hardly 'Left' at all. (Traditionally, the Left believed in civilizational progress; science and reason; the rule of law (they just wanted it extended to previously-marginalized groups, with equal rights for all). The 'woke Left' hardly even pays lip service to these ideals now.)

And there are still traditional liberals, who adhere to the ideals mentioned above, but believe they can be achieved within a market economy, albeit one in which the state intervenes a good deal to help 'level the playing field'.

And then there is the 'Hard Left', which includes as its main, but not only, component various species of explicit Marxists.

Although people on the Right tend to lump the whole Left together, they are wrong to do so.

The differences are significant for political strategy, since we (on the Right) need to be able to make temporary alliances with those parts of the Left with whom we agree on specific issues. (For example, there is a current on the Left which opposes most forms of gun control -- these are people who are planning, explicitly, to kill us some day.

But for the moment we have a point of agreement. If we could unite with Stalin to defeat Hitler, we can unite with these people to defeat extremist gun control measures. See, for example, The Socialist Rifle Association, here: [ Socialist Rifle Association ]. By the way, these people are just as quarrelsome as some on the Right are, and at the moment, they're arguing among themselves. It's worth going to this link and reading about their latest internal dispute.)

And ... some of the explicitly Marxist Left are not-stupids (. They are very misguided, wrong in many things, refusing to learn from history ... but they're not ignorant and not stupid. (And often at odds with their emotional, reason-scorning pals in the 'Woke' part of the Left.)

One of their organizations is sponsoring discussion on the Ukraine war today.

I suspect it will be well worth listening to.

It will be here:
Hilarious when a fuckup tries to explain something.

The “anti war” Left is never anti war whenever a democrat is in the White House and are now out war drumming Dick Cheney …
Not true. “Anti-war” and “pro-war” must be defined in terms of a particular war, or else it is practically meaningless.

What became known in our times as the “U.S. anti-war left” was essentially opposition to the Vietnam War, which of course was a profound series of mistakes founded on Cold War assumptions.

That war was — at first — overwhelmingly supported by patriotic white working-class Americans — when the White House was occupied by liberal Democrats. The “left-wing anti-war movement” opposed LBJ. It had an “old left” pro-working-class element, but was largely led by a “New Left” of student radicals, pacifists, etc.

The OP makes some good points about today’s Democrats and what today’s Republicans (and Trump-supporting MAGA right wingers) usually lump together as “the Left.”

I think the real lesson of the 60s “anti-war movement” and later “anti-imperialist movements” is that neo-liberal imperialism and neo-conservative imperialism go hand in hand. They are bipartisan endeavors. The other key point is that the dynamics of U.S. capitalism drive it inevitably toward trying to maintain its post-WWII worldwide hegemony.

This dynamic is incredibly powerful, and it easily crushed and ultimately co-opted most of the student “New Left.”

There is no “MAGA foreign policy” if it is based on withdrawal to defending solely “U.S. interests” because U.S. interests are based on its domination of a global economic empire of “liberal capitalism” and supposed “free trade” policies — policies even Wall Street and certainly U.S. geo-political strategists no longer believe workable, given authoritarian China’s rise.

The New Cold War era we are entering is very dangerous. This is not the place to analyze how we got here … and there is no point seeking partisan scapegoats for bipartisan errors of the past.

To get through this period successfully we need more than “tough guy talk,” nor can we capitulate before the aggression of authoritarians like Putin. We need rational statesmen able to build and hold together alliances of democratic societies — not something today’s MAGA right has shown much interest in.

Personality cultism and ultra-partisan demagogy, encouragement of hysteria / national conspiracy thinking / national divisions — these will destroy any possibility of getting through this period successfully.

The liberals and Democrats have their own serious problems, but they are — in my opinion — much more capable of handling present international challenges realistically and with at least some prospect of success.

A left-right alliance can indeed sometimes be important ... because neither right nor left is monolithic, as the OP points out. But for working people, defending their past gains under social democratic & welfare capitalism is central, as is opposing aggressive imperialist wars — like the U.S fought in Vietnam and Putin launched last February against Ukraine.

More than an occasional right-left alliance, in my opinion a rational, progressive and non-partisan independent perspective on globalism and imperialism — as well of course on domestic politics — is necessary.

Black families lived in close knit communities in the 1950's. LBJ is largely responsible for the deterioration of Black families with his welfare programs.
Hilarious rewrite of history fuckup.

What happened in Tulsa Oklahoma to one such black tight community?

The out-of-wedlock birth rate for blacks in the late 1950’s was only 20%. Post-great-society it is closer to 75%.
Efforts by social scientists to explain the rise in out-of-wedlock births have so far been unconvincing, though several theories have a wide popular following. One argument that appeals to conservatives is that of Charles Murray, who attributes the increase to overly generous federal welfare benefits. But as David Ellwood and Lawrence Summers have shown, welfare benefits could not have played a major role in the rise of out-of-wedlock births because benefits rose sharply in the 1960s and then fell in the 1970s and 1980s, when out-of-wedlock births rose most. A study by Robert Moffitt in 1992 also found that welfare benefits can account for only a small fraction of the rise in the out-of-wedlock birth ratio.

That may be true, but the implied causal relation is dubious at best. Also, in the 1950s the out-of-wedlock birthrate for whites was only about 3%, but today it is almost 30% — percentage wise a much greater increase.

What all this has to do with “A ‘Hard Left’ view of the War in Ukraine” … is a true mystery to me.

P.S. For my thoughts on the “Anti-War Left,” the “War in Ukraine,” and “right-left alliances” see:

If we had 25 million more Black people who were on the same footing as white people I would have no problem. I have a friend who is a retired high school teacher who still calls Black people the N word. He believes that after Appomattox, white people became color blind. He sure as hell isn`t.
After Appomattox??? Hardly! They pretended to become color blind after the 1960s. But our brains are pattern-matchers, they go on statistics. If you grew up where I did, you quickly learned about venomous coral snakes -- rather rare -- and non-venemous king snakes (or one species of them), which both have red, yellow, and black strikes. King snakes are good for reducing the rat population. So even if you want to kill coral snakes, you want to preserve king snakes.

And there are mnemonics to help you distinguish between the two based on which color their red stripe touches: "Red and Black, venom lack" [or "friend of Jack"], "Red and Yellow, kill a fellow!".
But no 12 year old, encountering a black, red, and yellow striped snake, ever stopped to remember that mnemonic or closely examine the snake to see which applied. (Those of our ancestors who had slower reflexes, or were more tolerant or curious toward snakes, didn't have as many descendants.)

It's not fair. It's just life. Which is no excuse for your ex-teacher friend. Doesn't he know about Black fellow teachers (albeit at a higher level than him) like
--Glenn Loury [ Glenn Loury - Wikipedia ] or --Thomas Sowell [ Thomas Sowell - Wikipedia ] or
--John McWhorter (whose book Woke Racism: How a New Religion Has Betrayed Black America is the best explanation of how the Left actually hurts Black Americans by making them think they are helpless victims)? or
--Carol Swain (whose woke students tried to get her sacked, and at least forced her to attend 'diversity thought control training')? [Carol M. Swain - Wikipedia ]

Send him the links above and ask him whether he would use the 'n-word' to describe these people. They're just the top of a pyramid of people who've taken advantages of the opportunities that a free society -- albeit one with people like him still in it -- offers today to people who want to work hard.

Of course, they're all academics. A kid in a South Chicago school probably won't realistically aspire to be a college professor.

So send your friend the following links as well -- and, again, ask him what word he'd use to describe these people. And then tell him to stop embarrassing us old Southern white men by being such an ignoramus. These folks are the real 'Black Lives Matter' activists ... and you can be sure the Left, or at least the Hard Left, hates them more than they hate us rightwingers, since it's people like these who give the lie to the Left's assertion that Black people's position in America is hopeless without a revolution that puts the Left in power.

Now, why don't we know about such organizations? Why aren't they being promoted by the Mainsteam Media? In part, perhaps, it's because they run against the ideology of the leftists who control that media. But I think the actual explanation is more mundane. After all, how many viewers will as news program showing young Blacks throwing Molotov cocktails at police cars get, vs one on the Society of Black Accountants?

Efforts by social scientists to explain the rise in out-of-wedlock births have so far been unconvincing, though several theories have a wide popular following. The late (and liberal) scholar John Flynn (discover/popularizer of the it's-all-IQ-refuting "Flynn Effect") explained it this way: there are so few responsible Black men to marry. Then the question becomes, why is that?

Hilarious when a fuckup tries to explain something.
