The old arguments about property and liberty seem to be true when you consider that the primary function of the government is to settle disputes involving property. The laws protect private property from being vandalized or stolen by another person and virtually no one would ever disagree with any law that prohibits another person from destroying another person's property. It was almost considered sacred that government could not interfere with someone's property rights whatsoever since any government that did was basically taking advantage of its authority to do what it normally puts people in jail for. If the government could take one ounce of your property then what would stop it from taking all of it as soon as it had the power to do so? And if even if it took only a little property from you wouldn't it be obvious that the mindset of those in power was to abuse their authority to enrich themselves? Once a government gets this mindset can you say for certain that it genuinely cares about your rights or your well being? It would be like if you emptied out the jail cell of thieves and put them in charge of keeping other thieves from stealing your property. Do you think they would care whether or not someone broke into your home?
