"Pagan" simply means "country dweller". A relic, pun intended, of a time when Christianism grew in the cities while those unfortunate lost souls (sarc) who hadn't known the wonders of washing in the blood of lamb sacrifice were considered country bumpkins. Until the armies of missionaries could make their way out there with the good news of what burning to death feels like if they didn't do it. Or if you were Irish in Cromwell's time you might get sent as a slave to the West Indies.
