So, what was it caused by?

Arctic cold air mass and proximity to warm bodies of water... Its called Lake Effect snow fall. The likes not seen in over 100 years or since the last solar minimum in 1903. Major portions of the peninsula received record snow fall. The oddity is the massive amount of clod air and its position of near equator. The result of a cooling biosphere.
