5 Points On Why The GOP Congress Is Careening Toward Another Shutdown

The government shutdown cots Americans $24 billion.

That’s according to an estimate from Standard & Poor’s. The financial services company said the shutdown, which ended with a deal late Wednesday night after 16 days, took $24 billion out of the U.S. economy, and reduced projected fourth-quarter GDP growth from 3 percent to 2.4 percent.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the economic cost by our calculations:

  • About $3.1 billion in lost government services, according to the research firm IHS
  • $152 million per day in lost travel spending, according to the U.S. Travel Association
  • $76 million per day lost because of National Parks being shut down, according to the National Park Service
  • $217 million per day in lost federal and contractor wages in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area alone.

who didn't notice?

morons, that's who.

No, it didn't. That was a number put out by the MSM that was rapidly dismantled. The net result was the shutdown cost us nothing at all.

I would absolutely LOVE for this government to shut down for a month. It would show everyone just how bloated and inefficient it is. My guess is the vast majority of Americans wouldn't even notice a difference.

it would show everyone what a dope you are too

Doubtful. The last time it happened most people didn't notice a thing. Make it last longer so the people can really see how useless a large part of the government truly is.

the people who weren't getting a paycheck didn't notice a thing ?

and you're from what planet again?
He's from the Bizarro world where "good am bad and bad am good".

There Will Be No $24B Economic Loss From The Government Shutdown

The news has been full of an estimate by Standard & Poor’s that the U.S. economy suffered a loss of $24 billion due to the government shutdown. Interestingly, the reports contain few if any details of where those losses came from and the Standard & Poor’s website does not seem to have any report backing up the figure either. I have found some of the suggested losses and they are all untrue. In reality, there will be no economic loss to the economy from the government shutdown.

Democrats Exaggerate Shutdown Costs
"Some Democrats have taken to exaggerating the cost of the federal government shutdown, suggesting that it cost the economy nearly 1 million jobs, and claiming that it cost taxpayers $30 billion. Neither statement is accurate.

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota stated in an Oct. 18 TV interview with a local station, while discussing the impact of the just-concluded shutdown:"

Our ruling

Doonesbury, aka Garry Trudeau, said the government shutdown cost the economy $24 billion. That is based on the highest of the independent estimates. The others are lower. Three prominent forecasters, Goldman Sachs, IHS and Moody’s assessed the damage at $20 billion. A survey of economists set $16 billion as the most likely figure.

There is broad agreement that the political impasse produced uncertainty that puts an ongoing, if unquantified, damper on growth.

Trudeau likes to say he aims for verisimilitude and he achieved that with his use of a high but defensible estimate from an independent source.

We rate the claim Mostly True.

then this ..

There’s little question that the shutdown cost taxpayers something. National Parks lost out on user fees during the shutdown, for example. And agencies may end up working overtime to catch up with work that wasn’t done during the closure. There’s also wide agreement that the overall economy will suffer, and job growth will slow, because of the disruption. Government contractors laid off thousands of workers during the closure, for example. And unlike federal workers, those private-sector job holders aren’t likely to get back pay for the time they were idle

Expanding on the OP:

1. The democrats think the gop will suffer politically from a govt shutdown. They suffered in the polls in 2013.

2. The gop congress does not think it will suffer. They picked up seats in 2014.
Midterm elections: electoral history predicted a GOP win long before the shutdown.

So once again the far left denies the facts and still pushes their propaganda without question or hesitation.

And the far left religion continues to prove why it is the most dangerous religion on the planet..

Shut the fucking thing down. Last time the worst the government could do to prove we need them is to close a bunch of open air memorials it takes exactly nobody to run. The rest of the bullshit nobody even noticed. Shut it down long term, nobody will give a shit.

That's what they said the last time there was a possible shutdown. When it actually happened they were whining and crying that Obama shut the government down. That Obama shutdown memorials.

Just wait, if it's shutdown it won't take but a few minutes until they all start whining about the big bad Obama who shutdown the DHS and left America open for an attack.

shut the sob down. The RW congress doesn't have the balls. With the Dems out of the picture there's no one else to blame . I dare them.

The Republicans got blamed for the last one, yet they swept the elections anyway. Nobody cares about the government being shut down because as Westwall accurately pointed out, very few regular every day people are actually impacted by it. It might make a great talking point for the leftist pundits and the mainstream media who carry the weight for the Democratic Party, but that's about it.

5 Points On Why The GOP Congress Is Careening Toward Another Shutdown

Talking Points Memo is a Left-oriented website, and Sahil Kapur is definitely from the Left, but the five points his lists are based on facts, the current standing of both the HOR and the Senate and also based on solid logic.

Here are the headlines to the five points, and I quote:

"1.) House Republicans are more worried about caving on immigration than a shutdown

2.) Senate Democrats are equally dug in against anything but a "clean" DHS bill

3.) Some Republicans are downplaying the impacts of a DHS shutdown

4.) Republican senators reject House GOP calls to gut the filibuster

5.) Congress is about to recess for a week with no viable plan"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The complete text to all five bullet-points are to be found at the link. Some interesting information there.

IMO, this is all about strategema, with very, very high stakes.
Whichever side blinks loses.

However, if there is a shutdown and somehow, because the DHS is not functioning as it should and a terror-attack happens, then we all lose. It's that simple.

Discuss.

When the arrogant, condescending, thin skinned President has a hissy fit that the Republicans won't send him the legislation he told them to and and doesn't sign it, that will be the fault of the Republicans, of course. Being dictator and all, it's tehir job to just write down what he demands and send it to them.

You know, like if a Republican President didn't like what a Democratic Congress sent him, you'd totally be on the President's side then too.

Like last time

Yes, you have a revisionist history. It worked with Newt and the liberal media, last time even with the liberal media trying to revive the success they had hammering Newt and ODictator shutting down parks to be a dick no one really cared. It was a big fat zero for you in the election, wasn't it sweetie?

shut the sob down. The RW congress doesn't have the balls. With the Dems out of the picture there's no one else to blame . I dare them.
Democrats are not in the picture? If the Democratic ... wait for it ... President doesn't sign legislation passed by both houses, the Dems are "out of the picture there's no one else to blame?" If the Democrat PRESIDENT doesn't sign the legislation? The only thing serious about liberals is your level of idiocy.
