I think that these racial tensions are only going to get worse, especially as blacks perceive police responses to criminal activity, as an attack on all blacks. It might force a radical shift in policing, with only black cops allowed to patrol black majority areas.

In the final moments of John Hobbs’ life, when suffering from what proved to be fatal wounds, the Phoenix police detective’s concerns were with members of his squad.

Hobbs first inquired about the well-being of Mike Miller and Albert “A.J.” Casados, two detectives who were with him during last week’s deadly shootout.

His thoughts then turned to his family. Hobbs asked Miller to tell his wife and children that he loved them.

The narrative, as told by a heartbroken Miller at Hobbs’ funeral Monday, elicited audible weeping from the crowd of thousands.

“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Miller said. “John was more than a friend to me. He was a brother.”

Men and women in blue from throughout the state joined Hobbs’ friends, family and community at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Peoria. Police, sheriff’s and fire vehicles occupied an entire parking lot.

Mourners spilled into lobby and courtyard area. As many as 5,000 people were in attendance.

It seemed as if Hobbs, 43, had been preparing his whole life to be a member of an elite Phoenix Police Department team, mourners were told.

Friends and family of Tyler Jacob Stewart recalled his sense of humor, infectious smile and fun-loving nature. Others lined the procession route to Christ's Church in Flagstaff.

The 24-year-old officer was shot Saturday afternoon while speaking with a suspect in a domestic violence report.

According to police, Stewart asked 28-year-old Robert Smith if he could check him for weapons. That's when Smith pulled a handgun and shot Stewart several times.

Smith then walked away and fatally shot himself.
