Pew Research Center estimates that there were about 3.3 million Muslims of all ages living in the United States in 2015. This means that Muslims made up about 1% of the total U.S. population and we estimate that their share will double by 2050.
A new estimate of the U.S. Muslim population
In regard to Muslims, what's true of Europe is not necessary true in the US for a number reasons.
- The Muslim population of Europe is 6 times that of the US about 6% and expected to grow to about 8% by 2030. Thus you would expect crime and terrorism committed by Muslims to be far greater than in the US, which it is.
- Unlike the US, Europe has had open boarders between member states and very little vetting of refugees.
- Since the beginning of conflict in Syria, an estimated 1,800,000 refugees entered Europe. By comparison only 120,000 have entered the US.
- Until recently, vetting of refugees for location to most European countries has been done by the UN, not the countries of destination. The process takes about 2 months and consist of two interviews and a background check. The UN vetting process is only the first step for refugees applying to the US. After the UN process, an initial interview is conducted followed by a background check which takes about 1 to 2 months. After the background check there will be 3 or more interviews, one will be separate interviews with all children as well as adults to cross check data. The interviews are conducted by DHS and the State Dept. A final interview after conditional approval occurs just before travel documents are ordered. The entire process takes anywhere from 4 months to a year. After entering the US, placement agencies take charge of the refugees. Monitoring continues for a minimum of one year.
