The military has a problem. They are not getting as many desperate poor people willing to be treated like garbage for the chance at an education, medical care and housing. For every one that joins out of some sense of patriotism there are ten who are there because it was the least shitty option they had to escape a shitty life in their shitty little town. It has always been this way and nothing has changed.

For a lot of people, the military offered a low cost education and a chance at a better life. But over the past 20 years, as the legacy costs of 20 years of wars and the damage they inflict has added up, the VA has become an ENORMOUS fiscal drain on the economy. The VA has become the largest department of government and the nation has not delivered the benefits promised in any kind of timely way.

As soon as these men and women return to civilian life, they're just part of another government program with politicians trying to limit the budget.
