They follow it more closely than the nations on the top of the misery index. Sweden and Denmark are largely capitalists nations. They interfere with private business a lot less than countries like Venezuela, and their governments are not total corrupt like Venezuela's.
Then how come California is a less miserable place to live than Okielahoma or Kansas? Ok, they're not countries but still....
Who says it is? How many Californian's do you imaging live in houses on the beach? There are lot's of lower income folks living two or three families to a house. When I was contracting in San Francisco, a lot of the consultants on my project were sharing a bedroom - not an apartment, a bedroom.

So why and how did Cuba and Mexico miss this chart?
Because Frisco has very high rents. People are willing to pay the high rents to live there. The misery index usually gets worse in right to work for less, republican run states.
Cuba doesn't have a fungible currency, so inflation is a meaningless concept there. Mexico isn't that bad of a place to live for most of it's people. The poverty is concentrated near our border, so Americans think Mexico is wallowing in poverty.
Rents are high because the state and local government severely limit the amount of housing that can be built there.

Regulations that limit the supply of housing. For instance, regulations that mandate large tracts of land to be reserved as "open space." There are also regulations limiting building height, especially in old San Francisco. That means fewer housing units per square mile. Rent control is another regulation that limits housing. It prevents landlords from kicking out tenants and building a bigger building. A variety of regulations—minimum lot sizes, maximum building heights, parking mandates, restrictions on renting out basements, and so forth—place an upper bound on the number of units of housing that can be built in any given municipality in the Bay Area.Why not just get rid of all the regulations that reduce the supply of housing?

The reason people have to share living space in California is the same as any State; Cheap employers and income disparity.
