World's most wanted Nazi arrested - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

The world's most wanted Nazi war criminal has been put under house arrest by authorities in Hungary.

Laszlo Csatary, the 97-year-old who tops the Simon Wiesenthal Centre's dwindling list of wanted Nazi suspects, said nothing as he was whisked away in a car following his early-morning arrest in Budapest.

Csatary was then questioned for several hours by an investigating magistrate at a military prosecution office.

The Wiesenthal Centre accuses him of organising the World War II deportation of some 16,000 Jews from the ghetto of Kosice, in present-day Slovakia, to their deaths at the Auschwitz extermination camp.

State prosecutor Tibor Ibolya said Csatary was surprised by his arrest.

"Our viewpoint is that at this age, being under house arrest is already quite a shock," he said.

"We have to make sure that this man remains alive and is able to stand trial.

First of all, this person is not the world's most wanted Nazi War Criminal. The most-wanted Nazi criminal whose death hasn't been officially certified yet is Alois Brunner (allegedly in Syria). Csatary is a fairly recent addition to the list, for the simple reason that with the elapse of time there really aren't that many escaped war criminals around anymore and so we're down to relatively small fry. It is also inaccurate to call him a Nazi War Criminal, for the simple reason that he wasn't a Nazi but a Hungarian official.

His crimes will ondoubtedly be real and gruesome enough. But this case is being blown a bit out of proportion because the media seem to hungry to find anybody they can still produce as a living example of the horrors of WWII. In the grand scheme of things, this was a pitifully insignificant person though. He shouldn't get more attention than he deserves.

The Wiesenthal Center didn't even put him on the list until earlier this year, which should tell you something.

And you are woefully ignorant about the Holocaust if you think a Hungarian official could organize deportations to Auschwitz. That is something the Germans (like eichman and Brunner) did.

I'm woefully ignorant? Okay, so the official in question, or so many LIKE him didn't cooperate with the Nazis? Are you fucking kidding me?
