Most of California is captured in this March 23 image from NASA’s Terra Satellite. The Sierra Nevada range is to the right. Snowpack there is half of normal. (Image: NASA EOSDIS Worldview)

A month ago, the snowpack in California’s Sierra Nevada range was looking really thin. This week, officials announced that it’s in even worse shape — just as the state goes into the warm season.

And for much of the rest of the West, it’s not looking too much better.

Those of us living here west of The Rockies shake our heads as we read/hear of the massive snow storms in the Midwest and East. What's going on here?

Interesting how 2 months can be so different...

On Monday, the Truckee River Basin's snowpack was measured at 102 percent of average for the date, down from the 192 percent that existed Jan. 1. The Lake Tahoe Basin's snowpack is now below average ...

Selective use of the dates in your article leave out the fact that this "crisis" is only during 1/2 of the season. And the snow went thru a heavy melt in Feb -- early this year..

192 percent of normal on Jan 1st --- NOW it's a crisis??? I doubt it...

Yep, I live in the Sierra Nevada mountains a couple of miles from Lake Tahoe and we had snow yesterday. And we'll probably get more tomorrow and Sunday as well.

Of course it is still low for the yearly average but last year we were 200% of normal so it balances out in the long run....that's why it's called an "average".

Funny how the OP ignores that...oh wait he's a warmist...that's what they do isn't it!
