The likely attorney general said prosecutors need “to be sensitive to the privacy and reputational interests of uncharged third parties.”

WASHINGTON ― William Barr, the once and likely future attorney general, is seeking to reassure senators that he’ll leave alone the special counsel investigation being run by Robert Mueller, telling them in response to written questions that he “would resign rather than follow an order to terminate the Special Counsel without good cause.”

But Barr’s long response to written questions from members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, submitted ahead of an expected vote on his nomination out of the committee on Tuesday, make clear that the final public report out of the Mueller probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election will likely leave much of the public dissatisfied.

Mueller and the Justice Department will, in all likelihood, conclude that ― even if they find evidence that President Donald Trump committed crimes ― a sitting president can’t be indicted. So the final report from Mueller’s team could have major consequences for the outcome of the investigation.

Barr said that in his view of the special counsel regulations, the report would be confidential, while the attorney general could release a separate report on the investigation that is intended for public disclosure.

But he also pointed to Justice Department guidelines that, he wrote, caution prosecutors “to be sensitive to the privacy and reputational interests of uncharged third parties” and “not to criticize individuals for conduct that does not warrant prosecution.” Both those statements could apply to Trump, should the Justice Department find nothing that rose to the level of criminal conduct or, as many expect, follow department protocol and decide prosecutors can’t charge a sitting president.

At his Senate confirmation hearing this month, Barr — first appointed to the post by President George H.W. Bush — called his longtime friend Mueller a “straight shooter” and said he didn’t believe the special counsel was leading a “witch hunt,” as Trump has called the probe. Barr also indicated that he thought the attorney general could have “flexibility and discretion” about what he could make public.

I don't trust Barr! He may leave Mueller alone to finish his investigations and report - but then shield the final report from the public. What do you think?

Sounds like money is talking in the background.

Well, I guess we'll find out if Barr is an American patriot - or just a partisan hack.

It really cracks me up when you people toss around the word "patriot", like you have been doing lately. Especially those of you who not only refuse to accept a constitutionally-legal presidential election, but are taking every desperate move you can think of in order to overturn it.

Understand this: You people are in no way "patriots." You could show up at the White House with goofy-looking three-cornered hats and single-shot muskets, but you'd still be the same old America-hating people you've always been.

Told ya.

Barr is holding to the DOJ policy that a President is non indictable and that if the subject of an investigation is not charged,,,the subject's actions should not be made public (do you hear that Mr. Comey?)

He never had any intention of releasing the Mueller report.

Thankfully Congress can subpoena it.

But this DOES point out the need or a Congressional investigation and hearing

There was never any doubt once he recommended the pardon for the Iran Contra criminals

I don’t think that Whitaker should even be the acting attorney general…He is a total Trump supporter and I’m very cautious about anything he has to say

Barr is a good man....of course John Roberts used to be a good man too until the D.C. cocktail circuit turned him into a jellyfish.

"Sen. Coons says it’s “chilling” to hear Matt Whitaker say there would be a review of Mueller report “I don’t have full confidence that the acting attorney general Whitaker intends to respect the independence of the special counsel and simply support and sustain“ Mueller report"

trump has put so many of his stooges in place....I doubt he gets any bad news from the report....The DOJ will probably give him an award for a well done conspiracy with his buddy Vladimir....

Sadly, you may be correct. I have no doubt that the full truth from Mueller will eventually be made public - but by then it may be too late.

So if or when Mueller announces that he couldn't find any evidence of Trump "colluding" with the Russians, are you going to stop this silly one-dimensional nonsense, or will it just be something else?

Mueller will leak it to CNN before he sends it to Congress

If the illegal Mueller witch hunt doesn't have any "collusion" between Trump and Russia, maybe Barr should look at the Hillary campaign and see how many scalps he can get from her team?

And there it is, the inevitable. When you don't get what you demand, just keep insisting on another investigation, and another one, and another one. How often have those on the left insisted that Mueller was the guy, that he was going to get Trump this time, for sure? Now, a surefire guarantee is the caterwauling that he was just a stooge all along if he fails to oust Trump from office.

I'd be more than happy to accept whatever the Mueller report says...as long as it's made public.

Looks like the odds of that happening are getting longer

The Mueller investigation was started illegally by McCabe and Strzok as payback for firing Comey. There was no evidence of "collusion". It was a political hit job on a newly elected president, one they hated, and they had an insurance policy setup to harass his administration and put as many of his supporters in prison as possible, for mostly perjury traps or anything they could find. These are the same guys who excused Hillary's blatant crimes. I hope Barr keeps cleaning out the criminals from the FBI and DOJ.

That would be dumb.

The leadership will be briefed on the findings and if Trump is implicated in the report as conspiring with the Russians... it will not matter.

I don’t think they should but getting the Mueller report made public would be easy peasy lemon squeezie for the Democrats should the AG do that.
