After calling members of the Minutemen project a bunch of "vigilantes" Pres. Bush continues to resolutely refuse to conduct any meaningful action to tighten border security.

I'm afraid that if he continues to act in this foolhardy manner, the Republicans are in for an ass kicking of biblical proportions in the next election.

WASHINGTON – The Mexican army is escorting those attempting to cross over the U.S. border illegally – including known drug-runners – to areas not patrolled by the Minuteman Project near Naco, Ariz., say Border Patrol sources and other officials including a U.S. congressman.

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, denounced the action by the Mexican military and called on President Bush to do the same.

"President Bush should publicly denounce Mexico's latest act to curb U.S. law," said Tancredo. "The president of Mexico is threatening to sue any member of the Minutemen who have contact with a Mexican national, threatening to take the U.S. into the International Court of Justice at the Hague over the passage of Prop 200 in Arizona, and is providing transportation to Mexican nationals trying to sneak into the U.S. One could say he is acting in the best interest of his nation. Isn't it unfortunate we cannot say the same thing about President Bush?"

Grey Deacon, a spokesman for the Minuteman Project, reported illegal immigration is down considerably from previous months in the area patrolled by the U.S. citizen volunteers trying to bring attention to the problem of the porous border. While he claimed credit for 241 Minuteman-assisted apprehensions by the Border Patrol in the week since the project began, he pointed out the 23-mile section of the border normally sees thousands of crossing attempts a day while they have been numbered in the dozens a day since the project began.

He said the Minutemen aided today in the capture of a "coyote," a professional human smuggler.

"But the traffic is down because the Mexican military is leading illegal aliens, including drug smugglers, away from the area of the border we are patrolling," he said.

Border Patrol sources say the Mexican army recently moved about 1,000 troops to the Agua Prieta region, just south of where the Minutemen are. These troops, the sources say, are diverting all of the illegal alien and drug-smuggling traffic away from the Minutemen.

Just prior to the launch of the Minuteman Project March 30, Miguel Escobar Valdez, Mexican consul in Douglas, Ariz., said the Mexican military was bracing for possible violence on the border.

"The Mexican army is on alert," Escobar said. "Also, law enforcement will be vigilant because the situation is very volatile. This is because, I have to say it, there are violent and radical elements on both sides of the border."

The Minuteman Project is a group of about 1,000 U.S. volunteers patrolling the U.S. side of the border on a 23-mile stretch in Arizona near Naco. When they spot illegal aliens crossing the border, they alert Border Patrol agents to make arrests. The members plan to stay through the end of April.

The volunteers focused on the border area near Naco because it had become one of the highest traffic corridors for border-crossing illegal aliens. Last year, more than 40 percent of the 1.15 million illegal aliens caught by the Border Patrol were taken into custody in the southern Arizona region.

If the Dems aren't standing up to protect our borders either, I don't see how his ignoring it will make a difference. I'm curious really what will be the issues that get brought up in 06

That is bullshit. Recall America's ambassador to Mexico. Let the Mexicans know any and all aid is suspended.

The crazy part is, they keep their country fucked up because they get guaranteed money from remmitances from the illegials working in the states.

We need to start attacking this problem at the source in the states and the source in Mexico.

Start pressuring Mexico to clean up its act politically.

Start punishing severely any and all businessmen caught using illegial workers.

All of these things were the requirements of passing the Amnesty during Reagan's watch. There were supposed to be strict sanctions against companies that hired illegals, ones that showed we meant something and pressure on the Mexican Gov't.

Bush is treating them like he still needs them for votes. Move on and get busy protecting our country. Those borders have undoubtedly let in one or two terrorists cells by now as well.

Illlegals present a huge challenge to the PC consciousness of our country---stopping illegal immigration is equal to discrimination in the eyes of many and

NO ONE WANTS TO TOUCH IT ! NO ONE !!

All they have to do is CLAIM they're going to do something. That will be enough to get the the votes they'll need.

I guess they could try the usually method but an empty claim may backfire. What even would they point to as an attempt at resolving the problem?

And no one will until there is an attack made from people who crossed those porous borders. Whomever is President when it happens will undoubtedly have many silly movies made about such a decision to do nothing by people on the other side who want to ignore the fact that only a few voices in our government are responsible enough to take this on, and they cannot do it alone.

I keep being reminded of a movie--The Second Civil War.
It's a parody of this exact issue--don't know if it is even around anymore but it's hyterical and scary at the same time---one of the Bridges boys stars in it.

I'm afraid he began writing the book on it Nov. 2nd. The first chapter was the massively un affordable drug program. Each chapter since seems to get worse.

well I'm set to back anyone who is presenting a better way of dealing with America's problems. Anyone looking good out there?
Or are we now to to expand the campaign slogan to "anybody but a republican" ?

The worst part is this; it will take a terrorist sneaking across the Mexican border and committing a terrorist act for this nation to get serious about illegal immigration. :wtf:

I would write to my Congressman and make my voice heard but my Congressman is Tancredo, it would be redundant.

Anyone feel free to stick a pin in my balloon if I'm over-selling here, but I believe that the issue of illegal immigrants and the threat to national security represented by them and our porous borders are a national priority.

If that's true, then how can Pres. Bush continue to ignore the ever increasing chorus of complaints coming from the very people who put him into office? How can his judgement be so poor that he even goes so far as to openly condemn the Minutemen project? Maybe the Dems were right. Maybe he is just a little bit stupid.

Actually I think people are beginning to pay attention, thanks in large measure by the Minutemen and the vigilante remark and the admin. decision to suddenly make 500-700 new border agents. Keep watching for border legislation and write your congresspeople. If they have a small but vocal minority, they will pay close attention.

You're not overselling. A terrorist will eventually use that open border sore and strike us in a most damaging, brutal way.

Pres. Bush and many Republicans are just trying to secure the Mexican vote from the Dems for years to come.

I don't think it's that only, even though that is a fact. I'm afraid that when all is said and done concerning the border crisis, we're going to be privy to some dirty little secret dubya has that's been restricting his involvement with the issue. Something he's brought with him to the Presidency from his days of Governor of Texas. After all, his home state borders Mexico. God only knows what kind of deals he already made with them BEFORE he was President.

Mr. Prez has no secret he's hiding, it seems to me to be an issue of money. Where is the money going to come from to stop the immigration? Bush hasn't exactly been enthusiastic about raising minimum wage, and all this cheap labor coming from the cockroaches makes it easier to pay the legit american citizens good wages, at least the ones who don't work labor jobs. Getting on mexico's back isn't likely to help the issue, when has mexico ever been organized enough for that to work for anything? There's no use blasting bush and the republicans, I don't exactly see any democrats rushing to stop the illegal immigration.

Neither the Dems or the GOP have ever wanted to make illegal immigration a hot issue. Primarily because of the large Mexican population that is already in the U.S. As an electoral block, Hispanics have one of the worst voting records of any in the country. No one wants to ignite them into a voting block that could swing an election.

If you read further into this, it is not even an American problem. It is a Mexican problem, which no U.S. government (R or D) has ever sought to pressure them about. In Mexico, 10 percent of the people hold over 90 percent of the financial wealth. They live in regal splendor, while the majority have nothing. The Mexican elite are fine with this and want it to continue. Instead of working to create jobs and pay decent wages, they paint this portrait of America being the land of plenty. Go to America, work a job and bring your money home to spend here.
Reagan, to his credit, tried to cut down immigration. The Mexican government, through intermediaries in the U.S., tried to portray him as a racist in favor of killing his friendly neighbors. Same thing happened with Clinton. Both of them quickly backed off.

Even a liberal like myself is in favor of closing the border. This would force the Mexican government to deal with its own people instead of sending them into the U.S. to earn a living. I doubt it will ever happen. I doubt any politician would risk his or her political future by enraging the growing Hispanic population.
