As I know, Canada is a quasi-communist, socialist snowflake nation that exploits and perverts the "free market". The worst sponsors of this socialism are found in our security apparatus, from the local police on to the feds.
Mr. Ross is correct. Canadian provinces own the land (communist) and charge a fee to chop the wood. This is then passed onto the U.S and can be considered a method to subsidize. Much like Canadian operatives entering American corporations and interfering in the free market, this is another "Canadian Comrade" tactic. This particular debate has been going on for decades.
From wikipedia:
The prices charged to harvest the timber (stumpage fee) are set administratively, rather than through the competitive marketplace, the norm in the United States. In the United States, softwood lumber lots are privately owned, and the owners form an effective political lobby. The United States claims that the Canadian arrangement constitutes an unfair subsidy, and is thus subject to U.S. trade remedy laws, where foreign trade benefiting from subsidies can be subject to a countervailing duty tariff, to offset the subsidy and bring the price of the commodity back up to market rates.
Thank you Mr. Ross. Retroactive 90 days, so that's another $250M in the U.S coffers. Canada is going to learn, you interfere in peoples lives, business pursuits and career of your citizens, you will pay a price as there is ALWAYS a bigger dog on the block.
Next dairy, meat labelling and Canadian operatives covertly harming American business pursuits. Mr Ross is an intelligent, well read man who understands the difference between free markets and PR B.S. You can fool some people, but don't try and fool someone who doesn't buy the plastic arguments you are selling.
