Of course we need women in the military. Someone has to cook for the troops and iron their uniforms.

Actually, the main reason was because they found enemy troops fighting to the death more often rather than surrender to what they perceived to be females.

It is easier to get the enemy to surrender than to have them fight to the death. It was a tactical decision.

Israel initiated that in 1950 for cultural and religous reasons mainly.
They draft. A volunteer military must be more disciplined as they want to be there.
