Our economy and society depend on most people feeling the system is working for them. But a growing sense of powerlessness in all aspects of our lives – as workers, consumers, and voters – is convincing most people the system is working only for those at the top.

Raised on capitalism and free competition America is becoming a huge monopoly. Media monopolies control everything you hear and see, liberals and conservatives fused into one to dictate you their will, big business controls your well-being through employment policies. More competition in all spheres of life is what we need to revive the United States.

You are confusing crony capitalism (fascism) with free market capitalism. As government power grows private enterprise shrinks and the big boys prosper. Small business cannot deal with the legal, regulatory, tax and red tape that large companies can. They can have department solely for each one of those.

Which socialist countries offer the freedoms you are thinking about?

I dont think his statement disagrees with yours..... .....

It isn't only Americans. people all over the world refuse to take to power over their lives that is totally in their reach, but apparently beyond their grasp.

How funny to see you RWs agreeing with Dems.

But, even though you know the GOP works to enrich the 1% at your expense, I'll bet you all vote against your own best interests.

I totally disagree with that. I feel 100% in control of my life.

Those who feel otherwise, I fear, have succumbed to the victim mentality that permeates the society. This is why courts are overburdened with law suits; it's always the other guy's fault. You think of yourself as a victim of some boogeyman hiding in the shadows so, as a result, you are not responsible for anything that happens that has ill effects. Also as a result, the "victories" are artificially sweeter because you think you've overcome some barrier.

In reality, aside for extraordinary circumstances, you are the captain of your ship and you have nobody to blame except yourself if you forfeit control.

I feel I am the one controlling my own life, as well. But the number of possibilities and options that we have is gradually decreasing over time. Take 2016 presidential elections. We don't even know what candidates are going to do with this country if they get the seat.

Actually you are not quite right. Small business still prospers in the US.
I am not saying capitalism is bad. Capitalism is working perfectly, as it worked for us for ages. However, fusion of big business with interests in politics and politicians interested in wealth never brings progress and prosperity to the country.

Over 50% of the working population (120 million individuals) works in a small business;
Small businesses have generated over 65% of the net new jobs since 1995;
Approximately 543,000 new businesses get started each month (but more employer businesses shut down than start up each month).

All of the information will be on their websites (most will anyway). The truth is that the President makes very little headway without both houses of Congress and the House is going to be GOP stronghold for another generation

What about these two:

Finally, as voters we feel no one is listening because politicians, too, face less and less competition. Over 85 percent of congressional districts are considered “safe” for their incumbents in the upcoming 2016 election; only 3 percent are toss-ups.

Decades ago, political parties had strong local and state roots that gave politically-active citizens a voice in party platforms and nominees. Now, the two major political parties have morphed into giant national fund-raising machines.

Yeah...and?

I don't see how soberly assessing that government is broken is tantamount to saying I have no control over my life.

The title of the thread is this:

Why Millions of Americans Feel Like They Have No Power Over Their Lives

It isn't that government--which harbors a very small place in my daily routine--is broken and we're powerless to fix it.

No system works perfectly. Perfection is a religious concept. Small business makes up about 3/4 of new hires and small business is down, not up. Big business in bed with government is a real problem, it borders on fascism. That is not how the free market works. And no utopian socialist examples?

Oh for crying out loud. the damn wealth gap has grown even BIGGER under Obama who was going to wave his magic wand the make us all EQUAL/one/no losers in life because of their own CHOICES. no no no, it's because of that EVIL capitalism.

not to worry, Obama and his radical commies has been working hard to make us all Equal AND poor. only our masters in government can hold wealth.

That's it. Rich become richer and the rest become equal.
But I prefer to consider my life as something is truly mine and can be controlled only by me. Money? Capitalism? Oh, that sucks, I know. But capitalism won't last forever. But my life and what I do will last forever.
