Unfortunately the criminal elements in our society would be all over that in a heart beat (more than they already are), you'd be inviting in crime syndicates running human trafficking, drug sales, money laundering, etc.., etc.., en mass. It's a no brainer. I never thought about it but my husband brought this up to me and it makes perfect sense, especially in light of what is already legal in the porn industry
Ask your husband if he'd be okay with a brothel setting up shop in your neighborhood or next to his place of business, not to mention having his taxes increased to pay for the high costs of regulating it and increased costs of policing all the attendant negative consequences.
When it comes to legalized prostitution one of the largest hurdles is the "Yeah fine do it but not in my back yard" syndrome, the same problem that's been faced by adult bookstores and strip clubs only to a more extreme degree.
Someone had mentioned zoning the legality of it. I'm not expert on state law making so I'm not sure what is possible. I would not mind having it near my house or place of work as long as it was discreet. I mean, there are "massage parlors" everywhere.... not any different
It's not just local laws ("zoning") that you have to deal with, it's the State (and in some cases the County) as well, the challenge is that unless you're willing to foot the costs for VERY tight regulatory enforcement (which is expensive) then there is a strong possibility that what you'll end up doing by inviting brothels into your neighborhood is de facto inviting increased crime and blight with it.
It's a risk that so far most States, counties and cities across the country aren't willing to take and the only ones that have (here in Nevada) are very small, remote communities that have come to rely on it to support their tiny local economies and have (over many decades) learned to manage it.
Personally the idea of legalized prostitution doesn't bother me in the least bit, however I don't want to wreck the safety or aesthetics of my community or pay higher taxes to see it happen, so have at it folks, just NOT IN MY BACK YARD.
It's too bad it's not easier to make it legal with exceptions.
Like, you can market/advertise for it via ads, the internet etc., but not "walk the streets" or have buildings which business is ONLY prostitution...
Legal prostitution is far more complicated because of all the negative consequences it entails, you don't just have immediate costs (enforcement and policing) there are a whole slew of opportunity costs, for example:I just think if a guy/girl hook up and she wants some cash for her services, and it's done one on one (say, in a bar even) should be OK
1. Since the prostitutes would require medical certification and regular screenings, you're reducing the supply of health care professionals that can be servicing other patients while they're busy servicing the needs of the prostitution industry.
2. You have to hire a whole bunch of bureaucrats to license, inspect and regulate the industry, which are resources that can't be used to say, educate children or build roads.
3. You have to zone land (and infrastructure) for these businesses which is land and infrastructure that can't be put to other (more productive) uses.
Once you get past the costs and the safety risks, you have to deal with the inevitable "moral majority" protests, not to mention risking your property values and legitimizing prostitution as an acceptable profession for young women (do we really want to do that?).
Where's the upside? I mean beyond giving morons like Matt more than a snowballs chance in hell of actually getting laid without having to risk a solicitation charge......
