Thank you. There were actually several that would qualify as hate crimes, but the two that stick in my mind were 1) when the word J E W was scratched across the hood of our brand-new car, and 2) when I was 13 and home alone on Shabbos night, and two teen boys walked into the house, strolled over to where our Shabbos candles were lit, blew them out, and said “that’s what we think of your fucking religion.”

Not hate crimes, but I was also mortified when I wasn’t invited to a friend’s 16th birthday party because her father didn’t let Jews in the house. Another friend had her party at the local country club, where they didn’t allow Jews as members.

All that pales to what my grandparents endured at the hands of antisemites.
