Let's examine policies with the same logic you do understand.
Why doesn't banning abortion work? - No one is going to carry a baby to term because their congressman tells them to. They don't want a baby, they are going to do what it takes, up to and including as you describe "back alley" abortions. Allowing women to work with their doctors to make the right choice for them is the solution.
Why doesn't banning drugs work? - Because if people want drugs, they will get them. There are so many drugs and so many ways to get them. Guns are not rocket science and they're all over the world. How can you possibly believe you can keep guns out any more than we keep illegal aliens or drugs out? All making drugs illegal does is make the suppliers of illegal drugs rich. You want to add selling guns to their wealth?
So, if you think about it according to logic you do understand, the question to ask yourself is why ... would ... gun laws work? There is nothing hard about making or selling guns. Like abortion or drugs, how can you possibly believe that making them illegal would prevent criminals from wanting them? How would that we can't stop the flow of illegal drugs lead to you believe we could stop the flow of illegal guns into the country?
The effect is what we see, which is every time a shooter goes on a rampage, all you did was assure no one was shooting back. Because honest citizens don't break the law and having a minor gun charge could stop them from getting a job. So they obey the law.
