The republicans have the power to subpoena anyone they choose. Pompeo, Giuliani, Pence, Mulvaney all have first-hand knowledge and could testify as to trump's innocence. Instead, they want to call the Bidens, etc., people with no first-hand knowledge. The republicans obviously are covering up trump's actions and want to deflect attention away from them.

The whole Ukrainian thing has been meant to cover up the role of the Russians in meddling in our affairs and trump's desire to aid Russian interests.
