Get rid of the income tax entirely in favor of a national FAIR Tax or Sales Tax.

Which will basically shift the burden of taxes onto the poor and middle class workers. The wealthy will easily be able to dodge taxes. That's in no way "fair".

There is no need to tinker with how much we pay. The need is to cut spending massively and as fast as possible.

Revenue is almost the same today as it was in 2000. If you didn't get a raise for 10 years, would you honestly think ONLY about selling your house and car to cut expenses?

As to the thread, the GOP has succeeded in making everyone terrified of debt, and now everyone believes that lowering our debt is the single most important item. More important than jobs even. Of course, this is completely false, but the Dems are politicians and will cave to public opinion and drop the tax hikes and go all spending cuts.

After the economy tanks and they're all out of a job, maybe they'll listen then.

Rich people tend to "buy" a whole lot more "stuff" than poor or middle class people. If you tax purchases, then those who buy more stuff tend to pay more in taxes.

Even a flat tax would make richer people pay more since they tend to earn more, annually. When you say stupid things, like you just did, you do get called out on them.

JFK noted that a rising tide lefts all boats. History has proved him right. Kick the stops out from underneath our economy, and capitalism can achieve wonders. When the economy booms, revenues go up accordingly.

The reality is that the House will not pass the bill if taxes are raised, unless the Dems support the bill in numbers. Who wants to go back to their constituents and explain why they raised taxes (Repub) or why they cut spending (dem). Looks like major cuts on defense spending too, that ain't going to go over real well in conservative districts either, for either party.

I think Obama comes out of this as a winner, he's losing the independent voters but this might bring some of 'em back if the economy improves a little.
