The Brit stupidly adopted a 'free trade' policy in the later half of the 19th Century that cost them their lead in technology and gutted their domestic industrial economy in favor of pandering to London's financial speculators, and they ended up losing it all to Germany and the U.S., who had the sense to protect their industries and allow them to develop into global powerhouses. By 1900, they were toast, and by 1914 at the mercy of Germany's expansionist Kaiser. The French had to provide the majority of forces to stop Germany. The U.S.'s production tipped the balance, and did so in WW II also.

The U.S. has done the same thing, pandering to a bunch of Wall Street scammers and rent seekers. We are now suffering the same results of shifting from a producing economy to a financial one that produces very little.
