There have been MANY great practitioners of blues throughout the history of the music, which most believed to originate around 1920, in America's southern states. Blues music derived from jazz, gospel, folk, and old country music. Many of the early blues artists combined blues with religious music in their repertoire. My absolute favorite blues musician is Muddy Waters. His blues were/are some of the most powerful and heartfelt songs ever recorded. You really can't go wrong with ANY of his albums/CD's. His music really IS that good. Other favorites of mine include Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, B.B. King, Sam "Lightnin" Hopkins, Skip James, Elmore James, Albert King, Robert Johnson, Fenton Robinson, and Jimmy Johnson - who is STILL active in the Chicago blues scene at age 91! And also Buddy Guy, who has kept the blues "alive" probably more than any other older blues musician. So, here are some of my favorites, who are some of yours?
Can't disagree with a single one of your picks.
Saw Albert King in a small nightclub in SoCal (front row table) in the early 80's.
Simply outstanding! I might also add Stevie Ray.
Thanks for your post, Doc. Unfortunately I never saw the great Albert King live, or Stevie Ray, either. I sure wish I HAD.

I was supposed to work with Stevie Ray Vaughn. I wasn't able to do the job at the time which I wasn't happy about but believed I would work with him the next time he came to town.
I was wrong.
A few weeks after I was supposed to do that job, Stevie Ray died in a helicopter crash.

Wow, great pick of Dave and Joe! I saw that Ringo and his All-Star Band lineup in late summer of 1992 in west Phoenix, Arizona. The show was awesome, it was still really hot though after the sun went down. This WAS Phoenix, in the middle of August, outdoors. Todd Rundgren came out wearing just a big diaper and shoes! THAT was funny. Unfortunately Dave wasn't feeling well that night, he did only his signature song, "I Hear You Knocking". He apologized to the crowd for his illness. I had tickets to see him and Graham Parker (man, that would've been good), in 1989 or 1990, but the show was cancelled because Paul McCartney had scheduled a big concert at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe for the same day. I was VERY disappointed, to say the least.Wow, that's quite a list! You even got to photograph my favorite retro/pub rocker all-time, Dave Edmunds! What was he like? Every interview I've seen of him he seemed to be a very nice and humble guy.Wow, Aretha Franklin! She's THE best female r&b singer I've ever heard. She had just a fantastic voice. It sounds like that was a fantastic profession. And your info on Robert Plant is quite interesting. He seems to be a very nice guy in everything I've read about him. I've never read or seen ANYTHING bad about the man. Thanks so MUCH again for your wonderful posts on this thread. It's very much appreciated!Wow, thanks again for THESE pics! Robert Plant AND Jimmy Page, just spectacular. There have been MANY great practitioners of blues throughout the history of the music, which most believed to originate around 1920, in America's southern states. More of my favorites. They are more contemporary.
The second time I worked with him. It was 1995.

Jimmy Page isn't easy to photograph. He's not photogenic. Even though he stands next to one of the most photogenic musicians I've ever worked with. It's like night and day. The shots below were taken the first time I worked with him in 1995.

It was my career for 35 years. The reality is that all I do is just steal what's in front of me by pressing a button.
Robert is a pure joy to photograph and work with. The man was born to be on the stage. Seriously. I've worked with him 3 times. The first time was in the mid 80s when he released the Honeydrippers album. He did his regular set, took an intermission then came out and did the whole Honeydrippers album. He and all on stage were in 1950s clothes. I am one of the few who has photos of all of that.
Jimmy while is the most gifted men alive, he's a genius with a guitar, is sooooo not photogenic. He's like most gifted guitar players, he makes the most ridiculous faces when he plays his guitars. I love Jimmy. He's sweet. Both he and Robert have the same twisted sense of humor I have.
It was very interesting I can say that.
Robert Planet is a fantastic man. I just love him. There is nothing bad anyone can ever say about him. He's just a great man. I just love him.
The first shot, the one of him with him giving me that shit grin, I had just said to him, "oh just take your shirt off!" It was the end of the night and at the party afterward. I was no longer sober when I said that to him. He looked at me and gave me that shit grin. Then we both busted out laughing. It's an inside joke we had. I won't go into that, it's personal. We both have the same twisted sense of humor.
My favorite female blues singer is the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin. I had to travel to the other side of the continent to work with her, not many get that honor. So I got on that plane and went to the east coast. I won't put up any of my shots of her. It's just too painful for me to look at them. She was a great woman. Just typing about her and having that great honor has me in tears now. Her death was an extremely hard one for me. It still hurts.
Yes I got that great honor in 2001.
She didn't get on airplanes. She didn't like to fly. So she didn't do it. She didn't have to. She was Aretha Franklin. She did all her performances in the east in places that were close enough to drive.
Here is my public list of performers I've photographed. That is photographs and work that I will allow the pubic to see and buy. I have my own personal list that's more complete.

I worked with Dave in 1992. It was Ringo Starr's all star band tour. He had a fantastic lineup with him that year. Dave was one. Dave is a fun man. He loves to laugh and find fun in everything he does. He was a lot of fun to work with.
Here's a shot from that night. The man behind him fingering the chords on Dave's guitar is Joe Walsh. Look closely, Dave is fingering the chords on Joe's guitar too.
That was such a fun day. It is one of the jobs I loved the most out of all of the countless of jobs I've done in my life.

The day before his death, Vaughan told his band and crew members about a nightmare that he had in which he was at his own funeral and saw thousands of mourners. He felt "terrified, yet almost peaceful".[1] Backstage after the show that evening, the musicians talked about playing together again, particularly with Eric Clapton for a series of dates at London's Royal Albert Hall in February and March 1991 as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix.[2] Moments later, Clapton's tour manager Peter Jackson said that the weather was getting worse and they had to leave soon.[3] Vaughan's last words to drummer Chris Layton were "I love ya."[4][5]
Four helicopters were waiting to transport concert group members to Chicago. Vaughan was with his brother Jimmie Vaughan and Jimmie's wife Connie as they went to board their reserved Bell 206B Jet Ranger helicopter piloted by Jeff Brown.[5][6] Eric Clapton's tour manager Peter Jackson had told Vaughan that seats were reserved for all three of them.[2][7] However, they discovered that their seats had been taken by Clapton's agent Bobby Brooks, bodyguard Nigel Browne, and assistant tour manager Colin Smythe, with only one empty seat available.[2][5][8] Vaughan asked Jimmie and Connie if he could take the last seat saying, "I really need to get back."[2][5] Jimmie and Connie obliged and caught the next flight in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, with manager Mark Proct.[2]
Vaughan and the other three passengers departed aboard the third helicopter in dense fog at 1 a.m.[9] Jeff Brown piloted the helicopter off the golf course, at a higher speed and slightly lower altitude than the others.[6][10] It banked sharply[8] to the left[6] and crashed into the side of a 300-foot ski slope,[11] about 0.6 miles (1 km) from takeoff.[6] All on board were killed instantly.[12] There was no fire or explosion, and the bodies and debris were scattered over 200 feet (60 m).[7][10][11] No one was aware of the crash until the helicopter failed to arrive at its destination the next morning.
A Wisconsin Civil Air Patrol[13][14] search airplane found the wreckage at 7 a.m., 50 feet (15 m) below the summit of the hill.[6][10] Shortly after, Clapton and Jimmie Vaughan were called to the morgue to identify the bodies.[11] According to an autopsy report, Vaughan had suffered many unsurvivable injuries, such as transection and dissection of the aorta and multiple depressed skull fractures, along with a ruptured spleen and liver and fractures of the right thigh bone and ribs.[15] An investigation found that no drugs or alcohol were involved and that all victims had worn seatbelts. No mechanical failures or malfunctions were found with the helicopter.[6] Pilot Jeff Brown was instrument-rated and had many hours of experience operating the Bell 206B at night. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the cause of the accident was deemed controlled flight into terrain, as Brown could not see the hill due to low visibility.[10]
There must have been about 100 versions of the song "Cocaine Blues", and even entirely different songs all going by the same name, but through all of them, after 57 years of listening to just about every one of these, THIS ONE remains my all time favorite.
Cocaine Blues by Dave Van Ronk (1963)

List of music stars who have died in air crashes
With hectic tours to often remote places, the music world has been hit hard by air tragedies over the years.www.sandiegouniontribune.com

1. 3-11 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012

I have a funny story about Joe Walsh. I've seen Joe's live solo shows just once, in 1988 I believe, in Phoenix, Arizona. I took my then girlfriend to the show. Well, there was a bit of a delay between the opening act and Joe. After some time, Joe came on stage, appearing to be stoned out of his mind, dressed in a long, flowing red robe. He proceeded to tune his guitar for about 15-20 minutes! We thought, "Oh shit, this CAN'T be good." But after tuning his guitar and the rest of the band joining him onstage, Joe was absolutely fantastic. He mumbled something to the crowd, and he and his band tore the place up. He did a 12 minute or so version of "Rocky Mountain Way" that was just spectacular. He also did a version of "Life's Been Good" that was about that long, and fantastic, as well. And to cap off the evening, he and the band did a wonderful version of "ILBT", AKA "I Like Big Tits", in their encore. My girlfriend, who was very open minded, actually thought the song was funny, and she laughed at the lyrics. All in all, a strange, but ultimately wonderful evening with Joe!Wow, great pick of Dave and Joe!

We were at the same show but in different states. I can't be sure but if my memory is correct I covered that show in July 1992.
I was the photographer for the owner of the venue. The Champs De Brionne Winery. Which is now called The Gorge Amphitheater.
It's in central eastern Washington along the Columbia River Gorge. Which is in the desert. Just like you in Az, it was hot. I'm lucky, I love heat and enjoyed the sun. I can take those desert temperatures over 100 degrees much better than most people. Unfortunately when it comes to cold, I'm a whimp. Anything below 70 degrees and I'm freezing.
The lineup that day was Ringo Starr, Burton Cummings, Timothy B. Schmidt, Nels Lofgren, Todd Rungren, Joe Walsh and Dave Edmonds. Tina Turner's percussionist was with too but I don't remember his name. He is eye candy and I have a lot of shots of him performing that day and other jobs with Tina Turner.
Ringo loved the sunset so much that day that he stopped the show so everyone could watch it go down. Contrary to what some people say, Ringo Starr is a beautiful man. He is real and what you see is what you get. He loves beauty around him and has a warm heart. I loved working with him.
Here are a few shots of Ringo from that day and a shot of Joe Walsh as the Energizer Bunny.

^^^^^Thanks for more wonderful pics. I especially like the one with Joe banging the drum and wearing his rabbit ears!
