Does the government have a responsibility to protect US businesses from being hacked and faced with paying a ransom?

The Colonial pipeline was one recent example of a high profile hack. One of our local hospitals just got hacked and refused to pay the ransom.

Can't the FBI advise which security software is recommended?

As long as hackers make money, hacks will keep happening.

The FBI is way too busy stealing Melania Trump's underwear and arresting parents for showing up to their kids' school board meetings. Priorities, man!

Exactly! If the coxuckers would stop meddling in elections they might help people from being hacked.
Is it me, or is the FBI on the criminal side lately?

There was a lot of espionage going on during the Obama Adm.
They stole 25 million DOD employee's private information (which was probably used to steal the 2020 & 2022 elections) and nobody could figure out who was doing it (that was because it was the Obama Adm doing it).

To your point. We should be much better at secure networks across all industries.

There are literally a ton of companies out there that specialize in software and procedures to mitigate or help protect against ransomware.
It is up to the companies to choose their software and their strategy because I don't see the Feds recommending any particular brand.

This really isn't a political issue as it concerns straight up extortion of companies and isn't concerned with affiliation.
These groups and hackers just want money. The problem is well known enough that if you get caught with your pants down, you have no one
to blame but yourself.

Key phrase: "should be"

We're not. We're still getting hacked. We control the OS, which OS is "bullet-proof"? Redhat? Microsoft? LINUX?

I'm amazed that we're still getting hacked, and these are "garden variety" hackers. Just imagine if/when the "military grade" hackers attack.

Are computer administrators that stupid, or does the FBI need to manage systems to stop hackers? Do we need a LAW, or an EO from tater to the FBI?

All very true. That said....

If I'm president I want this hacking bullshit stopped.
1. I want the FBI to direct the OS makers to make their systems bullet-proof
2. If they can't, the FBI needs to issue a warning which OS systems to use and which to avoid
3. Maybe issue a tax break for the high-end OS upgrade cost

Doing nothing just rewards the hackers, and when the military hackers start their cyber warfare we need to be ready..

Well, IT staff and administrators can only go so far when the start of the balance of these attacks come from INSIDE their company. Could be something as simple as an ignorant user clicking on an unknown hyperlink. And the game starts.
So end user education is just part of the battle. Another part are higher up C level execs or directors who either don't make security a priority or can't decide on a direction (paralysis by analysis).

Bottom line here is that this behavior has been well known for some time.

All very true again.

Thinking out of the box. If hyper-links are the problem, eliminate them.
Copy/paste the link and add a warning if the link is not recognized. I think there is a list somewhere of bad high risk links?

If I'm an admin, the OS should stop hacks. Clicking on a link should NOT allow admin privileges.

LOL. They've been trying to make a bulletproof OS for almost 40 years now. If you have human beings designing the OS, then there will always be the possibility of gaps in the code that hackers can exploit.
The feds are not going to make recommendations. There are already dozens of sites out there that review OS distributions that users can query to get opinions.

Best methods of security I recommend are to cover the basics. Change default names, use complex passwords, use a secure password store program to keep passwords in, run anti-virus software, and most of all, if you don't recognize where the email came from..delete it straight away.

So how come the Federal government isn't hacked? Is it the threat of retaliation, or some OS magic hack stopper?

What does the DOD do to keep hackers out? There has to be a high-end OS out there that could be widely used to minimize hacks.

We are not concerned about the correct things these days.

The tranny movement is like 50% of media. China and Eastern block countries and Russia are eating our lunch with their tech abilities.

Do you ever hear of American hackers holding China or Rusdia for ransom?

Who was arrested for showing up to their kids school board meeting? Name(s) please.

Who was convicted of "stealing" Melania's underwear?

No, but general Jack Keane on FNC said that the US has the best hackers on the planet and we could do whatever we wanted to do against any adversary.

The Democrat Party pays these people good money to steal registered voter's identities and hack into government facilities.
Why would they want to pay anyone to stop it?

Because believe it or not, their systems that guard the front gates run encryption and have protections that you and I will never see in the light of day out here on the commercial side. Yes, a lot of government software and systems can be quite old, but the really important ones have doors of steel on them. That doesn't mean they aren't impervious, but the likelyhood of a major breach is infinitesimal. Physically, DOD sites are highly secure..including guys with guns that escort you around the datacenter and then keep watch on you while you do your work. :)
