Chief Justice pauses contempt order for mystery company in Mueller investigation - CNNPolitics
The company asked the Supreme Court to intervene after a federal appeals court ruling that ordered the company to comply with the subpoena, which required it to turn over "information" about its commercial activity in a criminal investigation. The Supreme Court action also paused fines the company was facing for every day of noncompliance.
"So far as we know, the Court has never had a sealed argument before all nine justices," said Steve Vladeck, a CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law. "They can keep parts of the record and briefing sealed, and often do, such as in cases implicating trade secrets. But there's no procedure in the court's rules for having the whole case briefed, argued and decided under seal.

The dispute involves an unknown company owned by a foreign nation, which has fought the subpoena and appealed a related contempt citation. In a brief order issued Sunday, Roberts stayed that contempt citation and associated financial penalties pending a response from government lawyers, due Dec. 31.
When the case was heard earlier this month, the courtroom reportedly was closed to the public and journalists were ordered to leave the floor where lawyers were presenting their positions.
