I remember seeing. that statue In the godfather when Vito Coreleone killed that other gangster after he had put money on that statue.... I remember asking myself where that money goes to and whether while it is being taken off the statue that some of it doesn't end up in someone pockets...I found it very humorous almost as humorous as being in Vegas and being told by a catholic parishioner That he went to church there and was told that the church accepts casino chips as donations....

Don't know. But if you wish to compare bizarre religious practices I hear there are a ton of them in Judaism.
so what about all the other festivals where they drag the status around and pin money to it and throw kissesWhat is supposed to do?
It's a festival in honor of Our Lady of the Fisherman. As early as the twelfth century, in Sciacca Sicily, Mary the Mother of Christ, is said to have intervened for some people of Sciacca in miraculous ways. A festival in her honor is held there each year--and also in Boston because immigrants from Sciacca and Sicily decided to be part of the celebration.
Centuries ago, fisherman played a huge part in transporting the original statue from where it was commissioned into Sciacca, and are still awarded the honor of carrying it through the streets.
The statue is supposed to do nothing. It is an honoring and a remembrance by people of help from heaven. It's a festival, a party, a celebration.

Anything can made to appear bizarre, and the further back the tradition goes, the more likely the meanings have been lost and buried in the sands of time. We so easily forget our history--even our own personal pasts. Besides, it is so easy to mock the unknown history, culture, and customs of those of which we are invincibly ignorant, especially if such mockery brings the mocker ecstasy and satisfaction, however temporarily.

I know of no festival where statues are "dragged around." Traditionally money attached to statues is given to the poor and needy, sometimes the poor and needy of the local neighborhood, and other times to a particular charity serving a poor part of the world.
