I read thread after thread where evil corporations and the free market are castigated by liberals and progressives. So, when I ran across this item, I decided to share it. The video is six minutes long but has some pretty interesting content. It can be viewed @

Can you summarize the contents of the video? I'm unable to view it. FWIW, this is a really good subject; too many Republicans have the mistaken idea that "free markets" and capitalism are the same thing. The fact is that they are often opposing philosophies.

opposing??? how??? capitalism is all about free markets. See why we have to be 100% positive that a liberal will be slow?

Capitalism is simply the private ownership of the 'means of production', which is a form of capital. A capitalist system that also includes government regulation and intervention is not a free market. A free market is the private ownership on the means of production and the absence of government intrusion.

Free market: an economic market or system in which prices are based on competition among private businesses and not controlled by a government.

So much for free market. What we have now is closing in on the opposite.

And, according the leftists, a "free market" is rife with those evil corporations and robber barons out to screw everybody who get in their way.

(Gee. Doesn't that sound like a bunch of politicians?)

Evil corporations and robber barons can only screw everyone who gets in their way when they have the coercive power of government at their disposal. In other words, they ARE the special interests that buy market share and/or a competitive advantage.

Government's job is to put the robber barons in check. Yeah, unfortunately government our government has become the robber barons.

Capitalism is actually more than just private ownership. In fact, some types of capitalism don't even involve that. More details here:

Capitalism - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

Wrong. Without private ownership you have socialism.
Wrong, you can have private ownership with socialism. Some terms like socialism are weightings, not absolutes.

That's not what I said. You can't have capitalism without private ownership. Of course, "private ownership" under socialism is mostly a fiction. IF it was genuine, it wouldn't be socialism. Either government controls industry or it's privately owned. The later is called capitalism and the former is called socialism.

A free market is the private ownership on the means of production and the absence of government intrusion.

absence? roads, plumbing, electricity, police, courts, defense, pollution, money printing etc etc all require govt. Capitalists are not anarchists, they are people who like very very limited govt.

wrong. police and courts are about the only things you could make a decent argument for, but that argument would still be flawed. Policing and courts can be provided by private corporations. Much of it is right now. Malls and gated communities have private security and many contracts are subject to binding arbitration.

Most of the plumbing and electricity in this country is already done by private companies.

not really, the govt heavily regulates to the point where they are not really private companies, and certainly not private companies who face competition and bankruptcy.

Actually, it's the government that works for the latter.

yes liberals love to combine business and govt into crony socialism. Obamacare is the perfect example.
