Secrets are secret for a reason. Making it public may have—MAY HAVE—revealed that one of the “hackers” over in Russia is working with us…. just spitballing. It’s not always the content of the secret, it’s the secret itself.

There was this TV show that came on Starz network called “BOSS” once. It only lasted 2 seasons. It starred Kelsey Grammar (aka Frazier Crane) as the corrupt Mayor of Chicago Tom Kaine. As I recall, The State Treasurer was going to run for office against him—he hadn’t announced yet. The Treasurer had a mole in Kaine’s office named Kitty. Kaine knew he had a mole so he calls in Kitty one day and mentions to her that he is going to retire at the end of the term. The next day, the Treasurer was announcing that he was going to run for Mayor; strongly indicating that he was going to “pick up the torch” from Kaine and indicating that Kaine wasn’t going to be running. Just by the content (which was false in this case), Kaine knew who the mole was).

The point though is that it is not up to the individual. When you work for the government there is a hierarchy and a chain of command to follow. If something is classified it isn't up to you to determine how it's handled. Unless you are Hillary Rodham Clinton.

I agree "leaking" and "whistleblowing" are one and the same, as far as the actual actions.
I don't understand why Winner leaked information that seems to have been pretty much in the public domain already? The place she sent it must have wanted real "documentation" instead of "anonymous sources," I guess. So the Trumpbots would believe it. It doesn't sound like she actually screwed the pooch, security wise. I know that doesn't matter, but it matters.

Secrets are secret…one does not get to decide why they are secret. Sometimes the information is not the secret—the source is.

Like trump telling the Russians the source of his info.
