What if the South Won?

Tell us, dear sir

What state rights were the south trying to protect??

Kevin lives in a delusional world, do not bother asking him that question.

Even though EVERY State that left the Union STATED in the document doing so that Slavery was the reason for the split. Even though the Vice President of the Confederacy stated in his speech that slavery was the sole issue driving the split.

If the South had of won the War of Northern Aggression, there would be grits on every menu in our country!

Is grits greasy? I like greasy food.

It's questionable whether grits even is food IMO.

I assume you know nothing about grits, because grits are simply a ground, usually white meal of dried and hulled corn kernels that is boiled and served as a breakfast food or side dish.

Hominy grits, or just plain grits, are an institution here in the South, though they can be hard to find in northern states. Hominy is made from flint or dent corn, varieties with hard kernels that are dried on the cob then removed and soaked in a solution of baking soda, lime, or wood ash. This process causes the hulls to soften and swell. The kernels are then hulled and degermed using friction, then dried. Grits, coarse whitish grains, are ground from hominy, as is masa harina, the flour used to make corn tortillas. If you really want to start from scratch, Mountain Laurel has instructions for the whole process, including making the lye solution with wood ashes.
It's interesting that the alkaline soaking process also unbinds necessary niacin in the corn, and has an effect on the protein balance. Though the overall available protein is decreased, the relative availability of the lysine and tryptophan are increased. The alkaline process has been used for centuries where corn was a native food, but in areas where corn was introduced as a new staple, the process was not. Pellagra, a niacin and tryptophan deficiency, became common disease in areas where corn was the main source of food, as in the early South. One has to wonder how ancient civilizations discovered the process which made corn a more balanced source of nutrition.

Well, Corporations would be in hog heaven. Slave wages and indentured servitude forever! Oh wait. That's happening now pretty much...

Yeah....people are FORCED to work for any given employer.
They are FORCED to accept the low wages
They are FORCED to accept deplorable working conditions.

Or is it that they simply like to complain and get as much free stuff as someone like you will make sure someone like me gives them?

People make choices...and then complain when they made the wrong choice.....Love what the left is turning this country into.

Speaking as a Yankee (no, not the ball-player kind), I confess that I actually LIKE grits. A southern aunt (my mom's Yankee brother married a southern belle) made them once in a great while during family reunions up in the North. I liked the way SHE made them. When I visit some remaining family in recent years down in the South, I sometimes order grits at restaurants -- or my brother (a damn good cook) sometimes makes some for us. He may be a mislocated Yankee, but he's been a southerner by residence for so long, he is more akin to a Southerner than many of the children being raised there now. Anyway, he makes excellent grits.

Good eatin'.

Grits are awesome. Esp. cheese grits or shrimp and grits Nawlins style. mmmmm. If they are greasy, you are doing it wrong. And they are eaten in the rest of the United states. Everyone else calls them polenta.

The Union wasn't fighting over slavery and didn't care about the *******. That's why there were loyalist slave states in the Union.

The North was motivated by economics, plain and simple, like most of the wars we've been involved in since.
Thanks for identifying and making yourself known.

:clap2:

Tell us, dear sir

What state rights were the south trying to protect??

The right to self-government, and the right not to have their money stolen from them for the benefit of the northern states. And yes slavery was an issue, though it really shouldn't have been, but it wasn't the only or the central issue.

4 states had declarations of secession. Not every state. Also, the President of the Confederacy stated that slavery was not the issue.

Delusional.

Yeah....people are FORCED to work for any given employer.

These days? You bet! And the starting pay is around $10!

They are FORCED to accept the low wages

Yep. See above.

They are FORCED to accept deplorable working conditions

You bet, if industry finally has its way with OSHA and other government regulation.

And we're not even going to mention outsourcing of so many jobs to third world countries WITH THESE EXACT LABOR CONDITIONS here, because I'm feeling generous.

First of, the states can self govern up to an extent. The question is where does state rights end and the authority of the Union begins. If the concept that is that State rights never end, then why form a Union?(thus the idea of a WEAKLY JOINED Confederacy of states!!)

In fact, besides slavery, there is not much else that the south went to war over. The idea of allowng Slave states to exist is the entire cornerstone of the State rights arguement regarding the civil war. Thus the question really breaks down to one of what is considered human rights and who should be considered human, and thus is really a question on how to determine the rights of man and not the rights of State!!

Now on this concept of stolen money--what money was stolen from the South and given to the North??

You missed the point......intentional maybe?

No one forces anyoine to take a job with any one in any industry

Tariffs. Lincoln was a big supporter of tariffs, which is why he had such high support in northern states like Pennsylvania, and none in the south.

Tariffs between states?? Or tariffs between this and other nations??

The first one was eliminated before the civil war, the second tended to change over time and most likely not the basis for War between the states.

Even so, the concept of tariffs were economic based and could be restructured so that both sides could benefit, and therefore was not an excuse for war, unless one side jst want everyone to follow their ideas.

If you want to eat and not live under a bridge, you pretty much have to take what you can get. We've got MBA's working at Starbucks up here...

Grits are simply a wonderful breakfast food. I highly recommend it. Also, if you'd care too, you can feed them to chickens! Now, a big southern secret. The reason Dolly Parton has such a big chest is that she ate lots of grits in her formative years.
