What happened to auto shop ,machine shop ,woodworking in High schools

We had it in Junior High. Those in the 7th grade took a 6 weeks period in woodworking/home ec(depending on gender), art, choir, and a couple of other arts type classes.

Everyone did it unless you were in the band.

A lot of the college degree jobs are not productive and useful jobs.
Trade jobs are productive and useful jobs.
Trade jobs make money for the employer.

Here are list of K-12 programs in one VA county center. Some are fun, some are practical. The center has a 4-bay automotive shop with all the fixings.

You couldn't offer all that in one high school

Consolidated in a county that's awesome

Needs dei to ruin it for the greater good

Voc schools are very popular, and trades skills are still taught in HS.

Hands down the four courses that I have used the information to advantage the most were my high school typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and journalism classes. Everything else had made life easier at times or more interesting--we all needed to learn basic math, fundamental English, some geography and history etc. but we got most of what we absolutely had to have of that in elementary and middle school (or junior high as they called it in my day.)

But those four high school courses have opened more doors for me and produced more opportunity for me to find great interesting well paying jobs over the years than any other single aspect of my education. And I'm sure those taking other basic 'trade' courses in high school have benefitted equally from having had those classes.

We used to have Metal shop too :) They would burn designs with a torch. Or take a sheet of metal and make a mountain scene. It was pretty cool :)
