Text of Bush's address
September 11, 2001 Posted: 11:14 PM EDT (0314 GMT)

(CNN) -- The text of President Bush's address Tuesday night, after terrorist attacks on New York and Washington:

Good evening.

Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts.

The victims were in airplanes or in their offices -- secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers. Moms and dads. Friends and neighbors.

Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.

The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness and a quiet, unyielding anger.

These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation.

Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.

America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.

Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature, and we responded with the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.

Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C., to help with local rescue efforts.

Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks.

The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacuated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight and will be open for business tomorrow.

Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business as well.

The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources for our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.

I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance.

America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world and we stand together to win the war against terrorism.

Tonight I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me."

This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time.

None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.

Thank you. Good night and God bless America.

I was referring to his response to the SHOE BOMBER, If the Underwear guy had succeded I'm sure Obama would have given a Nice, heart warming speech like the one above

Or stage a photo op on a multi-billion dollar warship....holding it away from family and friends for an extra day......can you just imagine that?

Perhaps they are pointing out that even though the terrorist are becoming more skilled and guileful in their approachs, the losses have been far, far less than under Bush.

Hey, give it time, I have great faith that Obama will continue to fuck it up.

Obama has messed very little up compared to Bush.

Why don't you (Willow wouldn't in another thread) give us the death toll of the Bush first year compared to the Obama first year from terrorist attacks?

Didn't you get the Memo??..Bush "Inherited" 9/11  :cuckoo:

And Obama just put paid to Cheney in his speech just finished on air.

Either my party jettisons the entire Cheney-Bush crowd and their syncophants, or the GOP is going to be in the wilderness for a very long time.

The difference is that after 911, Pres. Bush created the safeguards to protect this country for seven years.

Obama has been dismantelling them and that's why we are being successfully attacked again.

During his speech, Obama reiterated his intention to close Guantanamo Bay, saying it was a security threat to the United States as it is used as a recruitment tool for al Qaeda and other terror organizations.

But he said detainees would not be sent to Yemen until their security situation there is under control. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is based in the country and has taken credit for the foiled bomb plot.

"We will close the prison in a manner that keeps the American people secure." Obama said.

Bull Shit, Gitmo closing is more dangerous to the USA than it staying open. But that's just mine and millions of others opinions.

President Obama's top counterterrorism adviser lashed out at former Vice President Dick Cheney Sunday, accusing the GOP stalwart of either deliberately misrepresenting the President's position or being ignorant of it.

"I'm very disappointed in the vice president's comments," declared John Brennan, assistant to the President for homeland security and counterterrorism, on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"Either the vice president is willfully mischaracterizing this president's position -- both in terms of language he uses, and the actions he's taken -- or he's ignorant of the fact," he said. "In either case, it doesn't speak well of what the vice president's doing."

Brennan noted that he's worked for the past five presidential administrations, and he's neither a Democrat nor a Republican.

Brennan said Obama has been "very, very strong" on terrorism, noting the President said the nation is at war with an international network of terrorists in his inaugural address a year ago.

"I would not have come back into this government if I felt that this president was not committed to prosecuting this war against al-Qaeda," he said.

"And every day, I see it in the president's face. I see it in the actions he has taken. And, so, I'm confident that this country is, in fact, protected by this president's position."

Brennan said all the finger-pointing and partisan politics is disturbing.

"I find it very disappointing that people would use this issue -- an issue of tremendous import, of national security -- and forget that it is al-Qaeda that is killing our citizens," he said.

Or Cheney was spot on which he was.

Liberals are very upset about anyone committing blasphemy directed toward their golden calf.

once agin repignicans just spout erroneous talking points. To begin with bush blew it prior to 911 -he had the warnings and ignored them while he golfed and dreamed of invading Iraq. Then after 911 He failed to find the anthrax killer, then according to repigs put in place the system that has kept us safe for 7 years- evidently this was the same system clinton used to keep us safe for 7 years unless of course you cvonsider the shoe bomber a failure of this bush system- an almost identical situation to what we now have- I don't remember the repigs being up in arms over that guy-and it took bush 6 days to respond to that attack. No repigs are just into whining and crying about all things Obama. Very weak and childish.

One, Bush's national security team blew the warning leading up to 9-11.

Two, Bush's team failed to find the anthrax killer.

Three, thank heavens shoebomber was skilled personally as Bush or Cheney.

Four, Bush's national security team had eight months to protect the U.S. It failed.

What isn't true about all of that, Sinatra.
