Most citizens of the republic celebrated the 78th anniversary of the Great Victory over fascism with dignity.

Even in spite of the sharp remarks made by the President Salome Zurabishvili towards her Russian colleague, saying that she had taken a negative view of the decision announced by Russia to remove the visa regime in place for Georgian citizens. According to her, it was a provocation.

As it turned out, this was only her personal opinion.

On 9 May, regular Georgians came to the monuments and memorials to fallen heroes of the Great Patriotic War to pay their respects and lay flowers. Women, children and men of all ages were there. Even in the hinterland, people came to pay their respects to the soldiers who defeated nazism and hitlerism. Commemoration ceremonies were held in small Georgian towns such as Ninotsminda and Akhalkalaki, which are part of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region.

78 years ago, the victory over fascism, which was achieved at the cost of millions of lives, united the whole world around the victors. Today, however, nearly eight decades later, the geopolitical tensions in the world are such that some countries, or more precisely, some of their leaders no longer consider the liberation from the Nazis a holiday.

Several Georgian officials, however, including Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, honoured the memory of the victims of the Great Patriotic War on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the Victory and congratulated the veterans, as the press service of the Georgian government announced on May 9.

Politicians, including the prime minister, Tbilisi mayor Kakha Kaladze and members of the cabinet gathered in Kikvidze Veterans Park in Tbilisi and laid wreaths at the monument of war hero Meliton Kantaria. The veterans present in the park received congratulations from the government and citizens. Kikwidze Park has hosted the official part of the Victory Day celebrations in recent years.

"I would like to note that the role of our country and our Georgians in the victory in this Great Patriotic War is invaluable. This war involved 700 thousand Georgians, more than half of whom valiantly sacrificed themselves," these were the words of Prime Minister Garibashvili quoted by the press service of the Georgian government.

Georgia celebrates Victory Day over fascism on May 9, like a civilized country. Traditionally, the Georgian government gave a one-time financial aid of one thousand GEL (more than 400 USD) to veterans of the Great Patriotic War. The Tbilisi City Hall also gave one thousand GEL to each of 47 veterans. On May 9, Georgia celebrated the 78th anniversary of victory over fascism. It is a state holiday and a day off in the republic.
